Making the place we live in better and making life better for others. A major focus is youth projects, including international youth exchange.

We provide service and support for a number of organisations in the Mayfield and Newcastle area. Holding up our one small candle together with the other Rotarians and people of good will in the world as they hold up theirs spreads a light that chases away the gloom of poverty, of injustice, of disease, of conflict and illiteracy. Does it happen overnight? No, it isn't a one-shot cure it goes on every day. Do we care that other people notice what we do? Yes, because we want them to see that they can make a difference for the better too. Then they can feel as happy about what they do as we do.

At last night's meeting Donna Horsey spoke about the history and purpose of Ronald McDonald House. Formed in Philadelphia USA in the early 1980s, RMH provides a "home" for families when a child is being treated for cancer. The houses in Tamworth and Newcastle are 35 years old. All services are free. Despite ill children, the atmosphere is laughter and joy. The program depends on volunteers and private funding. There is no government support. Always full, 30 families a month are turned away.

We had a busy and warm day at Dangar Park, Mayfield, cooking sausages and selling many items in our Trash and Treasure sale. We gave away children's books. Very succesful day, with far less boxes to pack up at the end.

It is the fifth Tuesday in the month. Therefore it was a club social night at the Maryville Travern. Very relaxing with good food.

At our meeting tonight, our speaker was our National Youth Science Forum Year-11 student from St Phillips High School. During a very enthusiastic but relaxed talk, Bianca Miteff emphasised her focus on taking opportunities. She will go to Brisbane in mid-January with an initial interest in medicine. She has many interests: several sports, baking, crafts, horse riding, and reading and writing books. She has great potential to contribute to STEM and the Community.

Tonight. Tuesday Sept 22, we welcomed Fred Neal back to Rotary after 3 years of retirement. A former member of Cardiff and then Waratah Clubs, he missed the fellowship, activities, and meetings. We hope Fred will enjoy our companionship over the next few years

At tonight's meeting we were entertained by a very good talk by our Youth Exchange Student Eduardo from Brazil. There were several visitors, other exhange students, host parents, and YEP organisers. We learned that Brazil is about the same size as Australia, has more that 213 million people, and soccer is the favourite sport. Eduardo lives in the provence of Minas Gerais. The photos below shows aspects of his lifestyle. It was a very good talk.

At last night's regular meeting our speaker was the President of the Mayfield Buisiness and Industry Association, Aaron Burman. Aaron's passion is to help young men just released from prison to avoid further use of drugs and to find employment. He offers inexpensive boarding house accommodation. His main concern is the expansion of drugs on the street. He is unimpressed by the structure of local government. The support provided by State Government is limited.
