Rotary Club Newcastle Enterprise Making the place we live in better and making life better for others. A major focus is youth projects, including international youth exchange.

We provide service and support for a number of organisations in the Mayfield and Newcastle area. Holding up our one small candle together with the other Rotarians and people of good will in the world as they hold up theirs spreads a light that chases away the gloom of poverty, of injustice, of disease, of conflict and illiteracy. Does it happen overnight? No, it isn't a one-shot cure it goes on e

very day. Do we care that other people notice what we do? Yes, because we want them to see that they can make a difference for the better too. Then they can feel as happy about what they do as we do.

At last night's regular meeting our speaker was the President of the Mayfield Buisiness and Industry Association, Aaron Burman. Aaron's passion is to help young men just released from prison to avoid further use of drugs and to find employment. He offers inexpensive boarding house accommodation. His main concern is the expansion of drugs on the street. He is unimpressed by the structure of local government. The support provided by State Government is limited.

Today we cooked sausages for a large crowd at Newcastle Museum. It was their Science Information and children's science day. We sold 1000 sausages, completely running out at 1:30 p.m. It was a very busy day. Our new Youth Exchange Student from Brazil, Eduardo, had a wonderful introduction to Australian Rotary Sausage sizzle fundraising.

At tonight's meeting our newest member, Rebecca McMillan, introduced herself by answering questions about herself. She lives in Mayfield and has raised two children, both now in their early 20s. Her favourite meal is apricot chicken, often cooked by her grandmother while she was growing up. She has two dogs at home and enjoys gardening and "pottering" about the house. Her favourite holiday dream is travelling around Spain.

Tonight's meeting focussed on fairwells and welcomes, plus an excellent talk about the District Disaster Fund. We welcomed Eduardo Otavio, our new Youth Exchange Student from Brazil. We said fairwell to member Pat Brimble, who is moving to England. We heard an excellent talk by Phil Gorton from the Wallsend Maryland Club about the District Disaster Fund, and the use of funds raised to provide $500 cards to people affected by floods and droughts. The fund has raised over $550,000 to help over 1000 people on the land in need.

Last night at our club meeting, our speakers were Sally and Scott Farrar who own and operate the Mayfield Bakehouse. They have been in business since 2023. They make bread, slices, sandwiches, rolls and other wonderful treats. They supply bread to the Eat Up program and rolls for our BBQs.

At tonight's meeting Prof John Rostas, founding director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute, described how he and his family came to Australia in 1956 under the United Nations High Commission Refugee Program. He was 7 years old at that time. Due to unrest and Communist takeovet of Bucharest, John father lost his job. They were caught trying to escape to Austria, but with support from friends and family, finally got to Italy. A few months later they were granted stateless persons visa and sailed to Melbourne. His story was typical of many refugees from Europe.
