We’re celebrating National Water Polo Day with a special beginner‑friendly session — and we’d love to see the pool full of amazing women giving it a go.

If you can swim 50m confidently and tread water, you’re ready to jump in.
We’ll have coaches on deck to help anyone still learning eggbeater.

💦 FunFit Ladies – Session 6 Recap (Charlestown Pool)

Another gorgeous afternoon at Charlestown — calm water, great vibes, and a crew of ladies who keep showing up ready to learn, laugh, and level up.

Today’s focus was all about smart passing and team‑first play:

• Cross passing — learning to move the ball across the body, across the pool, and across defenders. The group picked it up quickly and started using it to open space and create cleaner lanes.

• Less‑dominant hand passing — the big challenge of the day. It’s always said in sport that being able to use both hands or feet is a superpower, and today the ladies proved it. Lots of wobbling, lots of giggles, and lots of improvement.

• Goal assists — understanding that the scorer finishes the play, but the team creates the opportunity. We celebrated the idea that the assist is just as important as the goal itself. Smart passing, good positioning, and unselfish choices are what make goals possible.

The best part?

The ladies started seeing the game differently — recognising when to pass early, when to support a teammate, and how their movement can create scoring chances even if they’re not the one shooting.

A beautiful session of teamwork, skill-building, and confidence.

We will also have a couple of surprises planned for the day.

💙💚 FunFit Tribute to Dolly Parton 💚💙

Today, the world lost Dolly Parton — a woman whose strength, tenacity and originality shaped generations. She was bold, brilliant, and unapologetically herself, inspiring millions through her music, her kindness, and her fierce commitment to lifting others up.

At FunFit Water Polo, we see her legacy reflected in our women every week:

• Strength — Dolly rose from a Tennessee cabin to global icon status, proving that strength isn’t about where you start, but how hard you keep showing up. Our women do the same — stepping into the water, pushing limits, discovering what they’re capable of.
• Tenacity — She kept creating, kept giving, kept dreaming, even through health challenges and personal loss. That same grit shows up in every FunFit session: the extra lap, the brave first shot, the “I’ll try again.”
• Originality — Dolly never fit a mould — she made her own. FunFit women do too. No two journeys look the same, and that’s the beauty of it.
• Passion — Songwriting was her therapy, her joy, her purpose. Water polo becomes that for so many of our women — a place to breathe, to laugh, to grow, to feel alive.
• Understanding — Dolly spent her life giving back, from literacy programs to community support. FunFit is built on that same foundation: women supporting women, learning together, cheering for each other.
• Uniqueness — As Beyoncé said, Dolly was ‘Bold and Brilliant and one of us.” And every woman who walks into FunFit is one of one too — bringing her own story, her own spark, her own magic to the water.

💙💚 FUNFIT LADIES — WEEK 5 RECAP (Charlestown Pool)

The morning didn’t look promising at first — grey skies, moody clouds — but Charlestown did what Charlestown does best… absolutely nothing happened. No rain, no drama, just a cracking session with an awesome crew.

Today was all about defensive body positioning and the art of making life difficult for an advancing attack. The ladies learnt how to angle their bodies to slow down ball movement, disrupt passing lanes, and force the opposition into tougher decisions.

A big focus was on head‑on‑a‑pivot — staying aware of both the ball and your opponent at all times. It’s one of those skills that feels small but changes everything: better reads, quicker reactions, smarter positioning.

The group was switched on, supportive, and genuinely awesome to coach today.

Back in 2021, at Speers Point Pool, we kicked off our very first term of FunFit Ladies Water Polo — a tiny group of women who were brave enough to try something new, jump in the deep end, and build something none of us could have imagined.

A lot of these incredible women still play FunFit today, and a few have gone on to join community water polo, growing the sport and strengthening the local water polo family.

This was the moment we caught the eye of Water Polo NSW and Australian Water Polo.
Just 18 months later, FunFit was awarded ‘Program of the Year’ and Coach Meg was named ‘Volunteer of the Year’ — recognition that started with those first courageous ladies at Speers Point.

Since then, FunFit has grown far beyond Newcastle:

• Programs in Wodonga VIC, Brisbane QLD, Drummoyne, Coffs Harbour, and the Central Coast
• This season, we’re in talks with two more states
• And yes… we’ve even had international enquiries

What started as a small beginners group has become a movement — connection, confidence, community, and a pathway into the sport for women everywhere.
