ABC reports a national-first Indigenous disability-led study has found First Nations people with disability can spend extended periods on remand without conviction and miss out on appropriate healthcare. Disability may go undiagnosed or unsupported, while a lack of interpreters and culturally safe services can further disadvantage people. Researchers say health and disability needs are too often treated as criminal matters, contributing to over-representation and unnecessary incarceration in Australia’s justice system.
