Lipizzaner Horses – A Proud Slovenian Heritage 🐎🇸🇮

The beautiful Lipizzaner horse is one of Slovenia’s most recognised cultural treasures and an enduring symbol of elegance, tradition and history.

The story of the Lipizzaner begins in the small Slovenian village of Lipica, located in the Karst region near the Italian border. In 1580, the Habsburg monarchy established the famous Lipica Stud Farm, where the breed was carefully developed over centuries. The horses were bred for their strength, intelligence, calm temperament and graceful movement.

Lipizzaners are best known for their performances in classical dressage, particularly at the world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Their stunning white coats, powerful movements and remarkable connection with riders have made them admired around the world.

Interestingly, Lipizzaner foals are usually born dark brown or black and gradually turn white as they mature — a unique characteristic of the breed.

Today, the Lipica Stud Farm remains one of Slovenia’s most important cultural and historical landmarks, attracting visitors from around the globe. The Lipizzaner continues to represent Slovenia’s rich heritage, deep respect for tradition and long-standing connection to nature and horsemanship.

From the Karst countryside of Slovenia to international arenas, the Lipizzaner horse remains a source of pride for Slovenians everywhere. 💙🤍

🏞️ Region of the Week: Bled, Slovenia

Set in the heart of the Alps, Bled is one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations. With its emerald lake, fairy-tale island and dramatic mountain backdrop, it feels like something straight out of a postcard.

At the centre is Lake Bled, with the picturesque island church and the medieval Bled Castle perched high on a cliff above. And of course, no visit is complete without trying the famous Bled cream cake 🍰

World Bee Day 🐝🌼🇸🇮

Each year on 20 May, the world celebrates World Bee Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role bees and other pollinators play in protecting our environment, biodiversity and food supply.

The date was chosen in honour of Anton Janša, a pioneering Slovenian beekeeper born on 20 May 1734, who is recognised as one of the founders of modern beekeeping. Thanks to Slovenia’s initiative and strong beekeeping tradition, the United Nations officially declared World Bee Day in 2017.

Bees hold a special place in Slovenian culture and heritage. Slovenia is famous for its long tradition of sustainable beekeeping, its unique Carniolan honey bee, and beautifully painted beehive panels that are part of Slovenian folk art. Beekeeping remains an important part of life for many Slovenians today.

World Bee Day is celebrated through educational events, honey tastings, workshops, environmental activities and community programs that encourage people to protect pollinators by planting flowers, supporting biodiversity and caring for nature.

Today we celebrate not only the bees, but also Slovenia’s proud contribution to protecting them for future generations. 💛

🇸🇮 Famous Slovenian of the Week: France Prešeren ✒️

France Prešeren is Slovenia’s most important poet and a central figure in its cultural identity. Writing in the 19th century, his work helped shape the Slovenian language and national consciousness during a time of rising cultural awareness.

His poem Zdravljica became Slovenia’s national anthem, and his legacy is celebrated every year on Prešeren Day, a national holiday dedicated to culture. His poetry continues to be studied and admired today.
