SILA is a not-for-profit organisation that works in the areas of language learning, literacy, linguistic revitalisation and translation. Having an affiliation with SIL international, we both work to support local communities to develop language solutions, expanding their possibilities and leading to better lives. In today’s world, there are many issues surrounding language, identity and culture. A
ccording to the UNESCO Atlas of Languages in Danger, approximately 40% of the world’s 6,700 languages are under threat of disappearing. This threat is exacerbated by increasing rates of urbanisation, globalisation and migration, growing discrimination, marginalisation and xenophobia and ongoing persecution and genocide. George Steiner, the philosopher, academic, and writer, wrote that ‘when a language dies, a possible world dies with it’. We at SILA share this sentiment, and believe that the restoration and growth of language helps to prevent the loss of culture, identity and histories. One strategy of preventing language loss is through strengthening the language community, which may be accomplished through the collective network of a diaspora. The term diaspora comes from the Greek language, combining the terms dia ‘across’ and speirein ‘scatter’. Originally, the term described a community that had grown roots throughout the broader Mediterranean civilization. Today’s diasporas may include; a shared language or ethnicity, a strong, united community or a network of families of friends with a common ideology. Oftentimes, these diasporas are comprised of people who have experienced trauma from expulsion from their original homeland or discomfort in their host societies. Belonging both to their new homes, their old homes, forming new histories and sharing a complicated heritage, modern diasporas are one of the only social formations that enable cultural identities to survive in today’s globalised world. With an understanding of the deterioration and eradication of so many languages, cultures and identities, as well as the role of diaspora communities in rectifying this distressing trend, SILA is engaging in a project that aims to promote and support language use and cultural maintenance for diaspora communities. Through the use of a variety of language tools and literacy resources, we endeavour to collaborate with communities in order to support their goals and aspirations. These may include; furthering language use, improving literacy, supporting educational programs, or a range of many other activities. Moreover, we provide free conversation and consultation, and will place no financial obligation on the communities we support. Our number one priority is to listen to the needs and wants of the community, and by doing so, we hope to create partnerships based on trust and mutual understanding. We hope that by supporting communities in the diaspora to develop and use their language, we can ensure that cultures, peoples, histories and languages grow to flourish and possess the power to command their own destinies.
