The Flourishing Communities Project

The Flourishing Communities Project We are bringing communities together to promote and support language use and cultural practices. In the modern world, this term describes so much more.

SILA is a not-for-profit organisation that works in the areas of language learning, literacy, linguistic revitalisation and translation. Having an affiliation with SIL international, we both work to support local communities to develop language solutions, expanding their possibilities and leading to better lives. In today’s world, there are many issues surrounding language, identity and culture. A

ccording to the UNESCO Atlas of Languages in Danger, approximately 40% of the world’s 6,700 languages are under threat of disappearing. This threat is exacerbated by increasing rates of urbanisation, globalisation and migration, growing discrimination, marginalisation and xenophobia and ongoing persecution and genocide. George Steiner, the philosopher, academic, and writer, wrote that ‘when a language dies, a possible world dies with it’. We at SILA share this sentiment, and believe that the restoration and growth of language helps to prevent the loss of culture, identity and histories. One strategy of preventing language loss is through strengthening the language community, which may be accomplished through the collective network of a diaspora. The term diaspora comes from the Greek language, combining the terms dia ‘across’ and speirein ‘scatter’. Originally, the term described a community that had grown roots throughout the broader Mediterranean civilization. Today’s diasporas may include; a shared language or ethnicity, a strong, united community or a network of families of friends with a common ideology. Oftentimes, these diasporas are comprised of people who have experienced trauma from expulsion from their original homeland or discomfort in their host societies. Belonging both to their new homes, their old homes, forming new histories and sharing a complicated heritage, modern diasporas are one of the only social formations that enable cultural identities to survive in today’s globalised world. With an understanding of the deterioration and eradication of so many languages, cultures and identities, as well as the role of diaspora communities in rectifying this distressing trend, SILA is engaging in a project that aims to promote and support language use and cultural maintenance for diaspora communities. Through the use of a variety of language tools and literacy resources, we endeavour to collaborate with communities in order to support their goals and aspirations. These may include; furthering language use, improving literacy, supporting educational programs, or a range of many other activities. Moreover, we provide free conversation and consultation, and will place no financial obligation on the communities we support. Our number one priority is to listen to the needs and wants of the community, and by doing so, we hope to create partnerships based on trust and mutual understanding. We hope that by supporting communities in the diaspora to develop and use their language, we can ensure that cultures, peoples, histories and languages grow to flourish and possess the power to command their own destinies.

A question we often get from leaders in the communities we work with is how they can keep their language alive. Often, they feel like they need large language schools and lots of resources. But something we've found in our years of working with communities is that the place where lasting language maintenance happens is in the home. Parents who feel safe to play make-believe in their language with their kids, who feel safe to share stories in their home language. These are where lasting change is seen and found across a multitude of contexts. If you'd like to know more, please reach out. We'd love to chat about how we can help your community.

Something we have often found here at Flourishing Communities is that many Australians struggle to understand the difficulties that migrants face entering this country, and they often assume that communities don't care to learn English. Often it's the opposite, they're willing to, but after decades living in refugee camps, they often cannot read in even their mother tongue to acquire English well. To make matters worse, even as they acquire English, they often worry that their children are losing their mother tongue after decades of seeing a decline in their language and their history. If you've wanted to see migrants thrive here in Australia, or you are from a community worried for the health of your language, please reach out.

This week, we're continuing to reflect here at Flourishing Communities about what and where we've had the opportunity to care for communities and what we did last year that has made a lasting impact. One of the blessings for our team down in Victoria was Dinka Pastors Daniel and Elijah, who took part in our Training for Transformational Development. In only one week, these two were able to come up with a fantastic project to help struggling youth in their churches through music, language learning and faith. We think that education is crucial for equipping community leaders to make wise decisions that bring about lasting change and impact. If you or your leaders would like to learn more, we'd love to meet you. Feel free to message us.

As we begin the year here at Flourishing Communities, we're reflecting on the great work that the communities we are walking alongside have been doing to support their language and their members. One of the things we've consistently found here at FCP is the utility of Bloom, a software designed to allow communities to create books and audiobooks in their language quickly and for free to be shared in digital and paperback formats. All it takes is a couple of hours to create a solid story to share with kids of all ages and stages. If you'd like to learn more about Bloom and how it can help your community, we'd love to meet you

Here at Flourishing Communities, we see the value that bilingualism brings to multilingual migrant families. Because it is within both the home language and the language of migration that meaning, identity, faith, and culture are shared, encouraged, sharpened, and expressed. Without both languages, these things are distorted, confused or lost and discourage individuals and communities from thriving. If you're feeling like this is the case for you, we'd love to catch up over a cuppa or a message.

Most of our staff here at Flourishing Communities are still on well-deserved leave this January, but a few of us are back at work. So, to start off our New Year, we wanted to share the Language Identity Journey. The Journey is a key piece of how we choose to operate here at FCP. It was designed from the ground up by linguists to train community leaders and members to make informed language decisions, to help them see clear solutions to existing language vitality issues. Our team here at FCP loves to share this training with leaders and community members because it empowers communities to be independent and self-sustaining. If you'd like to know more, please get in touch. We would love to chat with you.

Something that we think deeply matters here at Flourishing Communities is the sustainment of language. This matters for a variety of reasons, both for us as a project and for many of the communities we work with. Language loss affects mental health, identity, culture, and relationships. One particular effect of language loss that often isn't talked about is how it affects ecology and agriculture. A research team working in areas where indigenous languages are disappearing in favour of Indonesian has been exploring how language shift has affected agricultural efforts throughout indigenous regions. Encouragingly, the study notes that the perilous effects are addressable through community-led and driven efforts where linguists and ethnographers are walking alongside community members and leaders. If you're thinking through how to bring about such lasting change in your community, please reach out. We'd love to meet you.

At Flourishing Communities, we strive to equip community members and leaders with training, education, and tools to investigate and address larger community-wide language issues independently. Research in language development has consistently shown that communities capable of resolving language issues independently are more likely to exhibit higher language vitality. More than that, our team believes that there is immense dignity to be gained when individuals and communities are given the ability to have agency. As such, our project works to train and equip leaders and community advocates to provide these long-term solutions themselves and to train others in their community to do the same. Through models like the Language and Identity Journey, we aim to pass on the skills to leaders and advocates needed to implement long-term, lasting change. If these are skills you'd like to grow in to care for your language community we'd love to meet you.

Here at FCP, we often meet and hear of leaders and advocates who often feel the pressures of language shift as their children move away from the home language and towards English. They also struggle to find ways to effect meaningful change against this growing problem. Part of that difficulty comes from a lack of knowledge about how language shift happens, what causes it, and how it happens. Here at Flourishing Communities and SIL Australia, we have a system called the EGIDS Mountain, a tool for communities to see how their language is shifting and what might be causing that shift. It also helps leaders make informed decisions about what projects and activities their communities can commit to that will bring about meaningful change. If you're considering how to care for your community in this way, please reach out. We'd love to meet you.

Last week, members of our team, as well as staff from throughout our parent organisation, SIL Australia, ran Training for Transformational Development (TTD). SIL Australia has run the intensive in the past; it trains and equips staff and community members to design programs that communities can implement and run themselves to bring about lasting language change. Over the last week, we've been blessed to have Azande's Henry and Pastor Daniel, as well as Pastors Daniel and Elijah. These photos are from the last day of the intensive, where both groups presented their project proposals. If training like this would be interesting or helpful for you or your community please reach out, we'd love to chat to you and see how we can come alongside you

As we near the end of 2025 our team at Flourishing Communities are starting to shift focus. As the communities we work with often become busier at this time of year (not less) we've had the opportunity to do some reading and talking to other organisations and other practicioners in this space of language development. A book that's been coming up a lot in our space this season has been The Prophetic Imagination by Dr Walter Brueggemann. It has instigated a lot of reflection for our staff as we think about how our work in this space calls us to step into hardship alongside the people and communities we work with. As we continue to work in this space we are always trying to consider how to do our work as ethically as we can and works like The Prophetic Imagination continue to challenge us in our thinking and actions.
