🏛️ Every Building Has a Story – Help Us Tell Them!

The Sugar City Art Deco Society is about more than just architecture. We want to celebrate the buildings, people and stories that have shaped Mackay and given our city its unique character.

From iconic landmarks to the little architectural details you drive past every day without a second thought, there's history hiding in plain sight!

We want to uncover those stories, share old memories and encourage people to look a little closer at the city around them.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our Annual General Meeting this afternoon.

We’re pleased to announce our newly elected committee and congratulate everyone on their appointments.

Our incoming committee:

A special thank you to our outgoing Secretary, Sandy, and outgoing President, Deb Clark, for their time, dedication and contributions to the Society.

We also thank everyone who has supported the Society, attended our events and helped us celebrate Mackay’s wonderful architectural heritage.

We look forward to another year of sharing local history, celebrating our beautiful Art Deco buildings and encouraging the preservation of Mackay’s unique heritage.

One of the beautiful Art Deco buildings we talk about on our Mackay Art Deco tour.

With its strong horizontal lines, geometric detailing and those magnificent palms out front, this photograph captures such a wonderful moment in Mackay’s history — when the city was proudly being described as the centre of Queensland’s “sugaropolis.”

So much of Mackay’s history is still hiding in old photographs, books and souvenirs like these. ❤️

Join us for a relaxed Saturday morning stroll through the city centre as we uncover the buildings, businesses and characters that helped shape Mackay’s story as the Sugar City.

From our Art Deco architecture to hidden details and stories you may never have noticed, there’s plenty to discover right in the heart of our city.

A big thank you to the Hotel Mackay for hosting our Sugar City Art Deco Society meeting this afternoon.

The Hotel Mackay is an iconic part of our city’s streetscape and a great example of the architecture that tells the story of Mackay’s development through the sugar boom years.

Buildings like this are more than just bricks and mortar they are part of Mackay’s character, history and identity.

A fitting place to meet and talk about preserving and celebrating our city’s unique architectural heritage.

The first Saturday of the month rolls around faster and faster. Our September Art Deco Walking Tour is kicking off at 10:00am today.

Unfortunately this has standard practice in Mackay, the Council make big statements, do nothing for years and hope the rate payers forget come the next election. Just a reminder that in 2028 are the next Council elections. We will be watching to see how far the "REGIONAL MUSEUM " has progressed.

We’ll meet at Bluewater Quay on Saturday morning 5 September, at 10am, before heading off on a relaxed walking tour through the city.

Along the way, you’ll discover buildings rich in historical significance and learn more about Mackay’s architectural story — including some hidden details you may have walked past many times without noticing.
