HUGO — OUR GENTLE GIANT NEEDS A HOME BEFORE HIS FOSTER CARERS CHANGE THEIR MINDS!

Just look at Hugo.

He is a magnificent six-year-old male Ragdoll, and when we say this boy is stunning, we mean STUNNING.

Hugo is a big, beautiful boy with those extraordinary blue eyes and the wonderfully gentle nature Ragdolls are so well known for. He is already desexed, and MPRI will bring the remainder of his vetwork up to date before adoption.

His foster carers describe him as a big teddy bear and a gentle giant.

Hugo isn’t an in-your-face kind of cat. He is a quiet, gentle soul who enjoys human company without needing to be permanently attached to you. He loves being brushed and enjoys attention, and he’s quite content to sit beside you rather than on your lap.

Basically, Hugo wants to be your companion, not your hat.

That’s actually quite typical of many Ragdolls. They are often known for their calm, affectionate and easygoing personalities. While every cat is an individual, Ragdolls frequently enjoy being around their humans and quietly following the household activity without demanding to be the centre of it.

Hugo also gets along with other cats — although perhaps a more accurate description would be that he minds his own business. He isn’t looking for feline drama. He’s quite happy to coexist peacefully and get on with his day.

Noisy young children, however, are a bit much for this gentle boy. Hugo will hide when things become loud and boisterous, so we believe he would be happiest in a quiet, calm home where he can relax and feel secure.

At the moment, Hugo is missing his owner and adjusting to a major change in his life. At six years old, everything familiar to him has suddenly changed. What he needs now is someone willing to give him the security, affection and peaceful home he deserves.

And we probably need to find that person fairly quickly because his foster carers are becoming dangerously fond of him.

Hugo needs to be adopted before we have another foster fail on our hands!

We have a feeling this beautiful boy won’t be waiting long. Once you meet Hugo in person and see just how magnificent he is, we think he will be snapped up in a heartbeat.

KITTEN SEASON IS HERE — AND TODAY IT ARRIVED WITH A VENGEANCE

Today we were alerted to two mama cats huddled together, sharing the responsibility of caring for two litters of tiny kittens.

One litter is approximately three weeks old.

The other litter was born yesterday.

Two frightened, feral mums. Two litters of vulnerable babies. And somehow, these two girls have found each other and are doing their very best to keep all of those little lives fed, warm and protected.

Today we went out to see them, assess the situation and work out the safest way to bring both families into care.

A plan has now been made, our carers have been organised, and tomorrow we will return to collect both mamas and all of their babies.

A huge thank you to Janet and Bev, who immediately offered to take these two feral mamas and their kittens into care.

We are incredibly fortunate at Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. to have experienced foster carers who will say YES to the scary mamas — the hissing, growling, terrified girls who are simply trying to protect their babies.

These are often the cats that are extremely difficult to place. They can’t simply be picked up and cuddled. They need secure facilities, patience, experience and carers who understand that underneath all that hissing is usually a frightened mother doing everything she can to protect her kittens.

Our carers don’t expect gratitude from these mamas. They just give them safety.

They provide a quiet place to raise their babies, good food, clean bedding, veterinary care and, most importantly, time. The kittens can grow up safe and learn to trust people, while their mothers receive the care and understanding they need too.

This is the work our volunteer foster carers quietly do every single day.

MPRI does not have a shelter. Every animal we rescue goes into the home of a volunteer, and kitten season places enormous pressure on those homes. If you are able to donate, foster, volunteer or support our fundraising, you are directly helping carers like Janet and Bev continue saying yes when vulnerable families like these need us.

And as kitten season gets underway, please keep your eyes and ears open around your property.

Check sheds, garages, under houses, behind stored equipment, garden beds and other quiet, sheltered areas. If you notice a stray female cat suddenly disappearing for periods of time, appearing particularly hungry, or with enlarged ni***es, there may be kittens hidden nearby.

Please don’t assume that because you can’t see the kittens, they aren’t there.

Tomorrow is rescue day for these two little families.

It might look like an ordinary cardboard box to you, but to us, it can become the perfect little maternity ward for a mama cat and her newborn babies.

These particular boxes are absolutely brilliant for our rescue because they are especially heavy-duty, strong and sturdy. $500 LARGE FEMALE DOG DESEXING VOUCHERS — APPLY NOW

Thanks to the incredibly generous support of Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. is offering $500 desexing vouchers to help local families desex their large female dogs.

We know that the cost of desexing a large dog can be significant, and for some families that cost can mean the procedure keeps getting put off. This program is about removing some of that financial barrier while also helping to prevent unwanted litters before they happen.

To be eligible, your dog must meet ALL of the following criteria:

* Be an adult female dog
* Be a large breed weighing over 20 kg
* Not be pregnant
* Not be on heat

To apply, please email [email protected] and include your name, address and contact number, along with a clear photograph of your dog, her name, age and breed, and a short explanation telling us why you need this voucher.

Please make sure you provide all of the requested information when applying. Incomplete applications may delay assessment.

These vouchers are limited and will be allocated to eligible applicants.

Adult Cats Looking for a Second Chance ❤️

Kittens may steal the spotlight, but our adult cats have so much love to give.

Many of these beautiful cats have already known what it feels like to lose their home. Through no fault of their own, they found themselves needing help and a second chance.

At Mackay Pet Rescue, every cat in our care is fostered in a loving home, not kept in cages. Our foster carers spend time getting to know each cat’s personality, their little quirks, and the kind of home where they will truly thrive.

Some of the cats who come into our care have had an even tougher start. We often rescue feral or very frightened cats who have never known kindness or safety. With patience, time, and a calm environment, many of these cats slowly decompress. They learn that people can be gentle, that food arrives every day, and that a warm bed is a safe place to sleep. Over time, some of these cats blossom and go on to find quiet forever homes where they can continue their journey in peace and security.

Adult cats are often the most wonderful companions. They are calmer, affectionate, and deeply grateful for the comfort of a home where they belong.

What they need most is someone willing to see past their past and give them a future.

If you can provide a stable, safe and loving home for one of these beautiful souls, please reach out to the appropriate foster carer and arrange a meet and greet.

MERIDA — THE BRAVE LITTLE CAT WHO DESERVES HER FAIRYTALE

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful, fluffy girl named Merida. Like her namesake, Merida is brave, curious and determined to explore the world around her. But sadly, her story didn’t begin as a fairytale.

On Friday, we rescued Merida from the MCC Animal Management Centre. We estimate she is barely 12 months old — still really just a kitten herself and somehow this stunning, affectionate young girl had already found herself without a family and waiting in the pound.

At an age when her biggest worries should be where her next meal is coming from, which toy to chase and whose lap she can curl up on, Merida has already experienced the uncertainty of losing everything familiar to her.

We don’t know the chapters that came before. Merida, however, seems very keen to tell us. She talks. A lot.

Perhaps she is trying to explain where she came from. Perhaps she is asking where her family went. Or perhaps she simply has a lot to say about suddenly finding herself in a completely different world.

Her entire life has been turned upside down, so for now, we are listening.

On her first night in foster care, Merida was given time to decompress, with our senior resident Pavvy nearby for company.

Since then, our brave little princess has been exploring her new kingdom. She has met the resident foster cats. She has even met Gidget the dog. Much to everyone’s delight, the royal introductions went surprisingly well.

And we are quickly discovering what an absolute sweetheart she is.

Merida is soft, fluffy and breathtakingly beautiful. She loves being held, turns on that wonderful purr and has already demonstrated a considerable talent for smooching.

She is friendly. She is affectionate. She is curious. And despite everything that has happened, she still seems to trust people completely.

How nobody is desperately searching for this beautiful girl amazes us.

And the thought that someone may simply have abandoned such a young, loving cat to her fate in the pound leaves us without words.

Merida isn’t eating very much yet, but we aren’t surprised. Everything familiar has disappeared and she is still adjusting. She needs a little time, patience and reassurance while she realises that she is safe.

There is, however, another problem developing, her foster carer is becoming rather fond of her. And if Merida stays there too long, we fear we may have another foster fail on our hands!

So now we need to write the most important chapter of Merida’s story. HER HAPPILY EVER AFTER

We cannot change what happened to Merida before she came to us. But we can change what happens next. We want Merida’s next home to be her forever home. Not for six months.Not for a year. Not until circumstances change or the novelty wears off.

Cats can live for 15–20 years or even longer, and at barely 12 months old, Merida potentially has a very long life ahead of her. Whoever adopts her needs to be prepared to share that life with her.

This beautiful young girl has already been let down once. We intend to do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Merida is already desexed, and MPRI will ensure her vaccinations are brought up to date and that she is microchipped before adoption.

Somewhere out there is the person who gets to write the rest of Merida’s story. No more pounds.No more uncertainty. No more wondering where she belongs. Just a home, a family and a promise that this time forever really does mean forever.

UPDATE - KRISTAL HAS BEEN ADOPTED.

KRISTAL — SHE HAD NOWHERE LEFT TO GO

This is beautiful Kristal.

Kristal came into MPRI care yesterday because, quite simply, she had nowhere left to go.

Her elderly owner moved to Tasmania today. Sadly, the decision to rehome Kristal was left until the very last minute, with the mistaken belief that there would be plenty of people waiting to offer a lovely adult cat a home.

Unfortunately, the reality is very different.

There are far more people trying to rehome adult cats than there are people wanting to adopt them.

So we squeezed Kristal in.

Then, as luck would have it, one of our wonderful foster carers, Allison, arrived home from a much-needed holiday. Before she had even unpacked her bags or made it to the grocery store, she foolishly called our Animal Coordinator and asked the dangerous question:

“Is there anything that needs our help?”

Well, funny you should ask. We had literally just collected Kristal. We were sitting in the MPRI van (Kristal in the carrier) and were wondering where on earth we were going to put her.

Talk about impeccable timing!

And that is how Kristal found herself safely installed in a foster home almost before Allison had unpacked her suitcase.

We really are incredibly fortunate to have such a compassionate group of foster carers who continually open their homes and hearts when animals need them most.

Now we need to find Kristal the forever home she deserves.

Kristal is two years old, absolutely exquisite and very friendly. She is settling beautifully into foster care and showing us what a lovely girl she is.

She isn’t particularly impressed by the cat carrier, but honestly, Kristal has plenty of feline company there! Many cats dislike carriers, and for something used only occasionally, we think we can forgive her that little quirk.

WHY ADOPT AN ADULT CAT?

Adult cats are so often overlooked in favour of kittens, but there are some wonderful advantages to adopting a grown-up.

Their personalities are already established, so you have a much better idea of the cat joining your family. You can see whether they are affectionate, independent, playful, quiet or confident.

They have also moved beyond the tiny-kitten stage of climbing curtains, racing across furniture and investigating absolutely everything they shouldn’t.

Adult cats can still be playful and entertaining, but they often settle into a household more quickly and are very happy to spend their days enjoying the comforts of home.

And perhaps best of all, giving an adult cat a second chance is incredibly rewarding. They may not have the novelty factor of a tiny kitten, but they have just as much love to give.

Kristal’s world changed dramatically this weekend. Thankfully, she had somewhere safe to land.

Now she needs the final piece of her story — a family who will choose her forever.

WE WENT TO RESCUE ONE AND CAME HOME WITH TWO

On Friday, we headed to the Animal Management Centre intending to rescue one cat.

Despite already being top heavy with adult cats in care, we came home with two.

Because sometimes you look at an animal and know you simply cannot leave her behind.

This beautiful little girl, with the tiniest, most delicate face, had been found dumped in the Mackay CBD. Heavily pregnant and homeless, she then found herself in the pound.

With the weekend approaching and her babies clearly not far away, there was a very real possibility that she could go into labour there. None of us was prepared to take that risk. So she came home with us.

And judging by her reaction to foster care, she agrees 100% that we made the right decision.

She was settled into one of our large, secure catio enclosures and presented with her very own deluxe birthing box. She explored her new surroundings, checked everything out and then promptly returned to the box. Apparently, it passed inspection.

And then she slept. Not just a little nap, but the deepest, most peaceful sleep. Looking at her, you could almost see the moment she realised that she was finally somewhere safe. No streets. No pound. No uncertainty. Just a warm bed, plenty of good food and someone watching over her.

She now has a camera on her 24/7 and a dedicated foster carer hovering nearby, waiting for the first signs that her babies are on their way.

The resident cats have also received their eviction notices from the maternity ward. This little mama is already very protective of her babies, and they haven’t even arrived yet!

Situations like this remind us just how valuable our secure catio enclosures are. A pregnant or nursing mother can have a peaceful, protected space of her own while the other resident and rescue cats remain safely separated on the other side.

For now, we wait and watch. This little girl has done her part. She found somewhere safe before her babies arrived.

Now she can rest, and we’ll take it from here.
