ABANDONED AMONG THE MACHINES

Yesterday, a tiny black kitten, just 9–10 weeks old, was found alone at Paget.

He wasn’t hissing, biting or behaving like the feral kittens we regularly rescue from this harsh industrial area. He was friendly. He wanted people. He wanted help.

His little tummy was swollen with worms, a heartbreaking sign that he had not been cared for properly, but despite everything, he still trusted humans enough to accept affection.

Which leaves us with a terrible question. Who thought this was OK?

Paget is an industrial wasteland of sheds, warehouses, heavy machinery and constantly moving vehicles. There is no food. No water. Very little shelter. It is a harsh and unforgiving environment where even healthy adult cats struggle to survive. It is certainly no place for a 9–10 week old kitten.

If this little boy had been born there, he would have behaved like the other frightened, hissing feral kittens we rescue from Paget. Instead, this sweet baby purred and accepted cuddles. We believe somebody dumped him. Perhaps they work in the area and simply drove away, expecting a tiny kitten to fend for himself.

How long did he cry for his family? How many nights did he spend alone? How many close calls did he have with trucks and machinery? How long before hunger, dehydration or an accident claimed another innocent life?

There are alternatives, people. Rescues, friends, family, vets and even surrendering a kitten are all kinder options than abandoning one to die.

Dumping animals is not “setting them free”. It is cruelty. It is inhumane. Surely, as a community, we can do better.

Thankfully, this little boy’s story did not end in tragedy. He is safe now. He is warm. He has food in his tummy, worming treatment on board and people who care about him. He no longer has to fight for survival.

Someone chose to throw him away.

Mackay Pet Rescue chose to save him.

Because every life matters.

Even the little black kittens that somebody else decided were disposable.

WORLD CAT DOMINATION DAY – JUNE 24

We thought we were running Mackay Pet Rescue.

Turns out we were wrong.

The cats have been in charge all along.

They dictate feeding schedules, approve our furniture choices, supervise every Zoom meeting and insist on sitting on important paperwork. Some have even mastered the art of screaming at 5 am for reasons known only to themselves.

At MPRI, we have surrendered completely.

Our volunteers no longer own beds, couches or clean black clothing. We simply exist to open tins, provide heated blankets and admire tiny furry overlords who occasionally allow us the privilege of rubbing their chins.

Meanwhile, kittens are being trained in advanced domination techniques:

* Attacking ankles from under the couch.
* Sitting on keyboards during important messages.
* Pretending they are starving despite eating 14 seconds ago.
* Knocking objects off benches just to remind humans who’s boss.
* Occupying your lap and making you cancel all plans because moving them would clearly be a crime.

So on World Cat Domination Day, we encourage everyone to stop resisting.

The takeover is complete.

And honestly we wouldn’t have it any other way.

🌹 HER FAIRY TALE IS MISSING ONE FINAL CHAPTER 🌹

Every fairy tale deserves a happily ever after. But some fairy tales take a little longer to reach that page.

Long before she wore flower crowns and dreamed of butterflies, Briar Rose was a forgotten little cat trying to survive on her own. While the world hurried past, she searched for scraps, found shelter where she could and waited for kindness to find her again.

And kindness did find her. Gentle neighbours who refused to look away. A foster mum who opened her heart. A rescue group that promised she would never have to face the world alone again.

Today, Briar Rose is safe, healthy and blossoming into the beautiful little soul she was always meant to be. And oh, what a lovely soul she is.

Briar Rose has the gentle nature that tabby cats are so loved for. She isn’t demanding or dramatic. She simply wants to be close to her people. She adores pats, melts into cuddles and looks at you with those soft eyes that seem to say, “Thank you for loving me.”

She has a quiet, sweet nature and so much love to give. The sort of cat who will curl up beside you while you read a book, greet you when you come home and turn ordinary moments into something special.

Her veterinary work is complete and she is settling beautifully into foster care. But her story isn’t finished.

Because every princess deserves a castle.Not one made of stone, but a home filled with love.
A sunny windowsill. A soft bed and a family to call her own. Someone who will cherish her and promise that she will never again be left behind.

Briar Rose has already survived the dark chapter. Now she is waiting for someone to write the final pages. The happily ever after she has always deserved. Could that be you?

COME AND SAY HELLO THIS SATURDAY

The team at Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. will be at Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre this Saturday from 9 am until 1 pm.

Come and meet some of the gorgeous kittens currently looking for loving homes. After all, let’s be honest there are very few things cuter than kittens!

While you’re there, you can also support our rescue animals by purchasing tickets in our alcohol raffle or our car raffle. Imagine winning an amazing prize while knowing your ticket purchase helps feed, vet and care for vulnerable cats and dogs in our community.

STOP THE SUFFERING BEFORE IT STARTS

Every day, rescue groups across our region are trying to keep up with the growing number of unwanted puppies needing homes. Sadly, we simply cannot rescue our way out of this problem.

The answer lies in prevention.

Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. is calling on local businesses, companies and community members to help us tackle the problem at its source by sponsoring desexing vouchers for large breed female dogs.

Your tax-deductible donation can make a real difference.

* $1,000 will provide two vouchers and prevent approximately 150 puppies from being born.
* $5,000 will provide ten vouchers and prevent approximately 750 puppies from being born.
* $10,000 will provide twenty vouchers and prevent approximately 1,500 puppies from being born.

These figures are conservative. If the breeding cycle continues over multiple generations, the number of unwanted puppies and the suffering they endure is far greater.

Together, we can stop the endless cycle of backyard breeding, reduce the number of unwanted litters and create a better future for dogs in our community.

STOPPING THE CYCLE BEFORE IT STARTS

Twelve large breed dogs have now been desexed thanks to an incredibly generous $6,000 donation from Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd.

This donation doesn’t just change the lives of 12 dogs. It gets to the very root of the problem.

Rather than waiting for unwanted puppies to be born and then trying to find homes for them, this program stops the endless breeding cycle before it starts.

On behalf of Mackay Pet Rescue Inc., we extend our heartfelt thanks to Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd for their generosity and for the fine example they are setting within our community. Their willingness to invest in prevention rather than crisis management demonstrates genuine leadership and compassion.

Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd has shown that local businesses can make a real and lasting difference. Their support has enabled responsible dog owners to do the right thing and has provided hope that together we can tackle the root cause of the problem rather than simply dealing with the consequences.

We would also like to congratulate the 12 recipients who took advantage of these vouchers and made the decision to have their dogs desexed. We know desexing large breed dogs can be expensive, and we were delighted to help responsible owners do the right thing.

Together, these twelve surgeries have prevented hundreds upon hundreds of puppies from being born into an already overwhelmed rescue system.

Sadly, local rescue groups simply cannot keep up with the demand. There are now more puppies needing homes than there are homes wanting puppies.

This is why prevention matters.

We encourage everyone breeding dogs, or considering breeding dogs, to make a plan to have their dogs desexed. Rescue groups cannot rescue their way out of this problem. We must stop the cycle before it begins.

And to our local businesses and sponsors, we challenge you to follow the remarkable example set by Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd.

Imagine the impact we could make together.
