This week we’re donating these rematched containers to Rotary Inner Melbourne Relief Network (RIMERN).

We take mismatched containers from four brands (Decor, Sistema, Tupperware and Ikea) to rematch and rehome them. Unfortunately we can’t take other types because they’re hard to rematch and aren’t always suitable for rehoming.

In addition to donating containers to organisations like RIMERN, we also encourage members of our community to make use of this resource to avoid unnecessary consumption.

Instead of buying a new container, come and see if we have a rematched container ready for you to take or if you can find a replacement for a missing lid or container. There is no charge, just please let our volunteers (wearing name tags) know, so we can keep a record.

This past weekend a visitor reported that she managed to find replacements for two of three missing lids.

Afterwards she sent a message saying: “2 out of 3 lids ain’t bad. Really wasn’t sure I would find even one. HUGE thanks for this great initiative and all the volunteers that make it happen. I’ll be back 😊”

It’s great to see empty hooks on the gift bag stand because people had opted to get a gift bag from us rather than to buy a new one.

Thank you to everyone who’s reducing unnecessary consumption that way. This means these beautiful gift bags get reused rather than gathering dust somewhere or going straight to landfill.

There’s no charge for the bags, just unhook a suitable one and let one of our volunteers (wearing name tags) know, so they can keep a note for our records.

We’re currently giving out gift bags, but not taking any in, as we have quite a big collection built up. Once enough bags go out for reuse, we’ll reopen our gift bag collection again.

Thank you to everyone who dropped off bras with us on Saturday for Rotary Club of Kew Australia and Rotary Club of Hawthorn to share with women in Fiji.

The afternoon’s donations weighed 55.85kg, which is wild, considering how light each individual bra is!

If anyone wasn’t able to make yesterday’s drop-off, the two Rotary Clubs will continue to accept bra donations until the end of October at the Rotary Fair Trade and Gift Shop, 650 High Street, Kew East.

Yesterday’s special “Shred it and forget it” day in partnership with City of Boroondara saw 17 x 240L bins (about 1,190kg) of documents confidentially shredded. 81 people took part.

The destroyed documents will now be recycled, something that’s not possible with shredded paper via our normal recycling bins. That’s because anything smaller than a credit card is too small to sort during the normal recycling process.

The shredding event was a special, once off collection drive. However, our normal collection sessions (without shredding) will continue each Saturday, 2-4pm at 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East.

In April we stopped collecting plastic mail satchels because the small business we collected them for had so many, they wouldn’t need more for a while.

But the satchels we collected still continued to be used. See this lovely post from Round & Round the Garden, the small business we collected them for.

While there are now soft plastic recycling options again, reuse is always preferable.
If you run another business that can use these mailers, let us know and we’ll collect for you.

Slots have opened up for our paper shredding event in conjunction with City of Boroondara this weekend.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to go back to their booking email and cancel their slot once they realised they can no longer make it.

This free event is a chance to safely shred old bank statements, bills or personal paperwork. All paper collected through the service will be securely shredded on-site and then recycled.

Shredded or paper torn into small bits can’t be recycled through our normal Council bins, because the pieces are too small to process that way.

Shred it and forget it on Saturday, 5 September at the 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East. Bookings essential.

Bring along your confidential documents, including tax returns, bank statements, household bills and personal records which will be securely shredded on-site.

August brought 38 new visitors to our Saturday collection sessions, our biggest number yet in one month!

This year we’ve consistently welcomed between 10 and 35 newcomers a month, with more people typically discovering us during special collections. What made August’s record number of new visitors extra special, is that there were no special, once-off collections running that month.

We love meeting our new visitors and hope we’ll be welcoming you back again many times!

We are proud to support Rotary Club of Kew Australia and Rotary Club of Hawthorn as they collect bras to gift to women in Fiji.

The bras do not have to be new, but they should be in a suitable condition to give to someone else.

This special collection will take place this Saturday, 5 September, during our normal collection session, 2-4pm at 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East.

We love it when businesses offer their customers the chance to choose to reuse!

A huge shout-out to Bakers’ Art Balwyn North! They now offer customers the option to make use of reused bread tags when shopping there rather than taking new bread tags.

Bakers’ Art Balwyn North gets the bread tags for reuse from us. We also continue to supply bread tags to Hawthorn-based artist Linda Judge, who uses them in her art.

We can now accept both paper and plastic bread tags and not just plastic, as was the case in the past.

Bakers’ Art is located at 70C Doncaster Road, Balwyn North.

You can drop off bread tags (both paper and plastic) with us each Saturday, 2-4pm at 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East. We only close on weekends linked to public holiday and for our annual summer break.
