Kew East Community Recycling A volunteer-run community group recycling and rehoming hard-to-recycle items

13/06/2026

This post is a quick reminder we can only take Brita Maxtra+ filters for recycling, unfortunately no others types.

The filters go to a recycling program with corporate sponsorship. They only accept filters with a Brita logo and then only the Maxtra+ shape.

This week about half the filters dropped off were the incorrect type. The pic shows the filters we can’t take on the right and the type we can take on the left.

When we get wish-cycling (items that don’t match what we can take, but that someone hopes will be “close enough”), it often means a volunteer has to take the incorrect items home to put them in their own bin.

That’s not fair on our volunteer team. If wish-cycling gets out of hand, it could also affect the long-term sustainability of our program.

Please help us avoid this. Check the info on our collection boxes for details on exactly what we can and can’t take. If you’re unsure, please ask one of our helpful volunteers. They wear name tags to help make it easy to recognise them.

Kew East Community Recycling is open each Saturday, 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East.

If you have any unused, unopened toiletries or hygiene products that you won’t be using, please drop them of with us for Pinchapoo.

Pinchapoo helps Australians experiencing hygiene poverty.

During a recent survey among their partner schools 97% of the schools reported surges in need among students requiring access to the schools’ hygiene support program during times of heightened cost of living pressures.

You can drop off donations for Pinchapoo during our collection sessions each Saturday, 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East.

Our community has diverted another tonne (1,000kg) from landfill over the course of just six Saturday afternoons.

This means we've diverted more than 11 tonnes from landfill since our first trial sessions in October 2022. That's the weight of about 6 to 8 typical passenger cars.

That calculation doesn't even include the bottles and cans collected for the Container Deposit Scheme on behalf of 4th Kew Scouts. So, in reality it's even more.

We'll be closed this Saturday for the King’s Birthday long weekend, but will be back again as normal on Saturday, 13 June from 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall.

See you then!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our latest special collection drive yesterday, donating items for Community First Responders Australia to use in their first aid training.

We collected a total 35kg for them. That included old bras and t-shirts that will be used to practice cutting away clothing during first aid, as well as out-of-date but unused first aid items and EpiPens that will be used in demonstrations.

We also collect EpiPens as one of our regular categories, so please keep bringing them.

We’ll be closed next weekend for the Kings Birthday long weekend but will be open again as normal on Saturday, 13 June, 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East.

Today's the day to drop off these items for Community First Responders Australia to use in their first aid training.

Scroll through the pics for info on exactly what is needed, including the size of clothes. The bras and t-shirts will be used to practice cutting clothing off training dummies, so they need to fit.

Expired, unused EpiPens can be dropped off at Kew East Community Recycling on other Saturdays as well, but the special collection drive for the other items is only open today.

Saturday, 30 May, 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall, 13 Glass Street, Kew East

Recently there have been a few attempts to squeeze full-sized ice cream tubs like these into the disposable cup recycling tubes. Unfortunately, we cannot take them!

While we can take small (single-serve) ice cream cups we can’t take the bigger tubs, like these Connoisseur ones. If a cup doesn’t easily slip into the collection tubes, please don’t force it.

Help us avoid wish-cycling. If unsure something is suitable to drop off, please check our pinned social media posts or ask our helpful volunteers. You can spot the volunteers by their name badges.

Our collection sessions take placs each Saturday, 2-4pm at the 4th Kew Scout Hall.
