The Mawson's Huts Foundation is a not-for-profit that is dedicated to conserving Australia's Antarctic Heritage. Visit us at http://www.mawsons-huts.org.au

The Mawson’s Huts Foundation was established in 1997 with the support of the Federal Government expressly to conserve Mawson’s Huts at Cape Denison. Since then it has funded and organised 14 major expeditions to the historic site with our latest expedition departing Hobart on the 4th of December to the Historic site. Our first expedition in 1997-98 was preceded with a two person team the previous summer consisting of a heritage conservation expert and an architect/photographer who helped to prepare a detailed works programme for a team of 15 who arrived 12 months later. This team of heritage specialists almost certainly saved Mawson’s Huts from imploding and being blown into the Southern Ocean. With Mawson’s Huts almost totally full of ice the storage platform under the apex of the living area was loaded with ice and vital support beams had fractured. If these had collapsed experts said the building would have collapsed causing irreparable damage. Since then the Foundation has raised in excess of $10 million with around $3 million of this coming from special grants from the Federal Government. We work in partnership with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) which approves all work undertaken by the Foundation on each visit. Based in Sydney, the Foundation operates the Mawsons Huts Replica Museum in Hobart, as well as inspire Australian children around the country on Antarctica, It’s science, history and Its place in Australian folklore.

Remembering Sir Douglas Mawson — 68 years on.

Today marks 68 years since the passing of Sir Douglas Mawson, one of Australia's greatest Antarctic explorers and scientists. His remarkable legacy lives on at Cape Denison, where the historic huts of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) have endured for more than a century in one of Earth's harshest environments. Preserving these extraordinary buildings, and the stories they hold, remains at the heart of the Mawson's Huts Foundation's work.

As we reflect on Mawson's legacy, our international charity auction is entering its final hours. Among the extraordinary opportunities available is an Antarctic voyage for two with Aurora Expeditions, alongside limited-edition Antarctic watercolours, historic Frank Hurley photography, fine-art prints, jewellery and unique experiences.
