Over the past month, our crew and community of incredible volunteers have been busy getting the STS Leeuwin II ready for her upcoming voyages.

On Friday, she will head north on a Youth Adventure Voyage to Geraldton, followed by a visit to the Abrolhos Islands, before returning to Fremantle in July.

Places are still available for these and other voyages later in the year, including Duke of Ed voyages and public Day Sails. Book your spot via our website, or contact us for more information.

Just off the coast of Geraldton in the Mid West Region of Western Australia lies an archipelago of 210 islands, islets, and rocks known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. The remote Abrolhos Islands are a biodiverse hotspot and home to some of Australia’s most unique corals.

Sailing this time of year is underrated, so we've organised a series of Youth and Ocean Adventure voyages heading north to the Mid West over the coming months.

We have three upcoming voyages in June, including Youth Adventure Voyages to Geraldton and a five-day voyage around the Abrolhos Islands open to adults of all ages:

Crew skill training night on the Leeuwin.

Last week's training was not all about business. Games, riddles and jokes are a key part of how our crew thrive during a night watch and the sometimes challenging midnight to 4 am watch.

This past training evening was all about pooling our ideas, tips, tricks and sea stories. Often, we find that when the magic happens on the ship, the team becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Some great stories were shared about those times at sea.

Last Wednesday's crew training focused on furling the ship's staysails.

Furling is the process where the crew have to lay aloft to pack away the sails. Many of our sails have to be furled with techniques dating back hundreds of years and cannot be done alone.

These skills, the language and the teamwork that must exist to get these kinds of jobs done are still alive onboard the STS Leeuwin II, being passed from generation to generation.
