Today is World Environment Day 🌏

Established by the United Nations in 1972, this global movement encourages worldwide awareness and action for the environment. This year the focus is on climate change, on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back.

We are thrilled to be contributing through our Woodlands and Coastal Restoration Project, our Containers for Change program, and by supporting the efforts of the Rottnest Island Authority to increase their use of renewable energy sources on the island, including the solar farm and wind turbine.

Rottnest Island is home to the world’s largest quokka population, but their woodland habitat has been dramatically reduced since European settlement.

We're working to fix that. Our Woodland and Coastal Restoration Project plants thousands of native seedlings every year, grown at the island’s own nursery 🌱

More woodland = more food and shelter for quokkas

This EOFY your donation, goes directly to restoring quokka habitats.

June marks the beginning of the Noongar Season, Makuru.

This season covers June and July bringing cold westerly winds and rain across the island.

On Wadjemup the Warrdong (Australian Raven) begins its breeding season, and the rainfall encourages new plant growth and rejuvenates the boorn boodja (wetlands) that many bird and insect species call home.

Rottnest Foundation are honoured to acknowledge National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June.

As proud members of Reconciliation WA we aim to respect and acknowledge the custodians of this land.

With this year's theme of "All In", all Australians are called to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

Working closely with the Whadjuk Noongar people our conservation activities on the island aim to honour the Traditional Owners of Wadjemup by promoting the rich cultural heritage of Wadjemup/Rottnest Island.

The restoration of the Woodland and Coastal habitats of Wadjemup have been a top priority for the Rottnest Foundation for many years.

But did you know, various replanting, re-afforestation and restoration programs for the woodlands on Rottnest Island have been happening since 1883!

Pre-settlement it is estimated that 65% of the island was covered with large trees and woodland. Much of this was lost following settlement due to bushfires, land-clearing for crops, tree-felling for firewood and the destruction of young growth by hungry quokkas.

Forest cover on the island dropped to as low as 5% in the mid-twentieth century but has since made a remarkable recovery due to ongoing planting programs.

Work to restore the Woodlands and Coastal habitats of Wadjemup continues to be of critical importance. It is crucial for improving the habitats of native fauna, preventing erosion and stabilising sand dunes, ensuring Wadjemup is conserved for future generations.

Today is world bee day!

A day set aside to celebrate bees and raise awareness of the essential role that bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy.

Wadjemup is home to several species of bee, including the blue-banded bee and the rare Douglas's Broad-Headed bee.

Rottnest also provides an ideal location for the WA Better Bee's breeding program. The isolation of Rottnest means queen bees are more docile, more productive and are not exposed to foreign bee diseases.

Just another reason to continue protecting and conserving the unique environment of Wadjemup!

National Volunteers Week

We want to say a HUGE thank you to all our volunteers! 🙌

We recognise that your support has been key to the success of the Rottnest Foundation over the years. Without you, we couldn't do what we do!

Later this week we will attend the National Volunteers Week Lunch, hosted by the RIA, which brings together all the volunteer groups working on Wadjemup, and recognises their amazing contributions to the island.

In 2025 Rottnest Foundation volunteers planted over 3,700 seedlings, removed 200 tree guards and over 130 bags of sea spurge, with 1,200 volunteer hours donated in total.

We look forward to continuing this incredible work in 2026!

Today is Endangered Species Day.

It is the perfect opportunity to focus on educating ourselves and taking action to protect endangered species.

Currently there are more than 80 native Australian animal species that are considered critically endangered and almost 2,000 plant and animal species that are considered threatened.

While Quokkas on Rottnest Island are abundant, they are still considered vulnerable to disease and other environmental changes.

The Rottnest Foundation supports the conservation and preservation of these precious and unique Western Australian marsupials through our Woodland and Coastal Restoration Project.
