Bruce Turrkuwanti Thomas is one of the voices behind 'The Strelley Mob' touring exhibition, and he's got a story or two to tell.

Born at Moolyella (Ten Mile Station) in 1952, Bruce moved through several Pilbara stations before settling at Strelley in the early 1970s, where he learned to read and write in Nyangumarta in night classes taught by John Bucknall — and later taught it himself.

He went on to work on Nyangumarta and Martu Wangka Bible translation projects, record stories across the Pilbara, and teach at South Hedland Primary and Pundulmurra College. He became the first Chairperson of Wangka Maya Aboriginal Language Centre, a role he still holds today.

Bruce now lives back at Strelley, continuing a lifetime of work keeping language and culture strong.

'The Good' by Anna Louise Richardson is now open at Courthouse Gallery+Studio!

A major new solo exhibition by Anna Louise Richardson, 'The Good' emerges from the artists broader investigations into the complex relationships between humans and the natural world, tinged by grief and the competing demands of nurturing new life. In a world increasingly defined by division and hardship, the exhibition explores the necessary act of radical optimism needed to seek goodness in all things.

Anna's practice is centred around rural life, embedded in the experience and drama of everyday reality. Working primarily in charcoal and graphite, her work explores ideas of intergenerational exchange, parenthood and identity based on her experiences of living and working on a multi-generation beef cattle farm in rural Australia.

_____

On until 19 June at Courthouse Gallery+Studio, Port Hedland.

“My artwork is telling one little part of the Strike story.”

Rose Murray is a Nyangumarta and Kartujarra woman whose artwork 'Our families gathered pearl shell' is featured in 'The Strelley Mob' exhibition.

A Stolen Generations descendant, Rose’s mother was taken from Warrawagine Station to Roelands Mission. Through the guidance of Marrngu artists and teachers at Strelley, she reconnected with family and the Pilbara.

In this video, Rose shares memories passed down through her family of collecting pearl shell on the Pilbara coast. These collective efforts led to purchasing a station, establishing a school, and sustaining culture on their own terms.

As Chair of the Remembering the 1946 Pilbara Strike Committee, Rose is continuing this legacy, helping bring these stories into classrooms all across Australia.

“I chose 'Bold Intentions' because I came across an analogy from The Wilderness Society that described boldness as being like a scraggy plant growing on the edge of a rock face—finding roots in the nooks and crannies—having a strength, resilience, and inspiration, and thriving in difficult conditions. I thought—that’s the Mid-West. That’s what the Mid-West feels like to me" said Wiggy Mitsuda, curator of 'Bold Intentions', the Mid-West edition of the Regional Arts Triennial: Radical Futures.

We caught up with Wiggy to learn more about her creative practice, how 'Bold Intentions' came together, and its ongoing tour across the Mid-West.

The legacy of the 1946 Pilbara Strike lives on through generations.

For Barbara Hale — co-curator of 'The Strelley Mob' touring exhibition — that legacy is carried through language, learning and connection to Country. Raised in Strelley, Barbara now shares Wanman language with her grandson on the Country of his ancestors.

“I’m telling him, teaching him Wanman language as well so he’s talking Wanman in his great great grandfather’s place.”

“When I slowed down and experienced the artwork through touch, I realised how much more I could gain. Looking only can trick my mind into thinking I have seen the work when in fact I might have skim looked and only received the top layer of understanding” reflects Marianne Penberthy.

As part of her 'Activating Collections' residency, Marianne spent a week in Perth exploring accessibility in the arts, sensory exhibitions, and objects held within the WA Museum’s Collection and Research Centre related to vision and the brain.

Inspired by a large piece of brain coral (Favia) on display at the Museum of Geraldton, Marianne is looking into the resonance between the fibres and patterns of coral and sponges, and neural networks and labyrinths in the brain.

Thank you to our friends at DADAA and WA Museum for making Marianne’s visit so special!
