Western Rock Lobster

Western Rock Lobster Western Rock Lobster (WRL) is a non-profit incorporated organisation that represents the rock lobster industry in Western Australia.

The WRL fishery is a global leader in innovative, sustainable lobster management. The Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) is a non-profit incorporated organisation that represents the rock lobster industry in Western Australia. The Western Rock Lobster Fishery is iconic. It is the world’s first Marine Stewardship Certified (MSC) fishery and the largest wild caught commercial fishery in WA. The fis

hery is based on a single species — the spiny lobster (Panulirus Cygnus) — in an area along WA’s coast between Shark Bay and Cape Leeuwin. Western Australian rock lobster fishers are global leaders in sustainable fisheries management. The fishery is managed through an annual commercial catch quota system, which was introduced in 2008, with the total annual commercial catch capped at 6,300 tonnes. The Council was formed in 2001 to represent the industry on a variety of issues including changes to the management system of the Western Rock Lobster fishery, submissions to Government on behalf of the industry, sourcing funding for industry projects and engagement with Government on behalf of fishers. The Council is made up of a Board of eight directors, elected by Managed Fishery Licence holders, as well as two independent directors appointed by the Board.

A great start to the WRL Digital Ecosystem Roadshow 2026!

The WRL Digital Ecosystem Roadshow is all about bringing digital technology to life — giving fishers the opportunity to see new tools in action, understand how they connect, and explore how they can support the day-to-day operation of a modern fishing business.

The Roadshow kicked off this week with a workshop at Western Rock Lobster headquarters, bringing together the teams from Western Rock Lobster, Diversus, Dragonfly, Oceanum and Veris to prepare for the week ahead.

Today, we took the Roadshow to Hillarys Yacht Club, where we were joined by fishers for a fantastic day of demonstrations, conversations and collaboration.

There was good energy in the room, with plenty of ideas shared, valuable feedback provided and some great discussion about how technology can better support fishers, both on the water and across their businesses.

Most importantly, the day was about working together. Bringing fishers, developers and industry specialists into the same room created a valuable opportunity to share perspectives, challenge ideas and help shape digital tools that are practical, relevant and built around the needs of the Western rock lobster industry.

The Roadshow team heads to Geraldton tomorrow, ready to continue the conversation and share the digital ecosystem with Mid West fishers on Thursday.

A fantastic start to the week and plenty more to come!

⚓🦞 A FREMANTLE TRADITION CLOSE TO THE HEART OF OUR INDUSTRY

Western Rock Lobster is proud to once again support the Fremantle Blessing of the Fleet, returning on Sunday 25 October 2026.

Since 1948, the Blessing of the Fleet has brought generations of fishing families and the wider Fremantle community together to celebrate faith, tradition, our maritime heritage and the people who have helped shape our fishing industry.

For many Western rock lobster families, this is much more than an annual event. It is an opportunity to honour those who came before us, celebrate the strong connection between Fremantle and its fishing community, and pass these traditions on to the next generation.

CRACKING THE LOBSTER AGE CODE 🦞🔬

Age is one of the factors used to inform stock assessments globally 👵

The age of a fish can be measured by its ear bones – they’ve got rings like a tree – but lobsters don’t have any!

Principal lobster scientist Simon de Lestang has been developing a new model for measuring stocks of invertebrate and shellfish species 👀👇
