Western Rock Lobster (WRL) is a non-profit incorporated organisation that represents the rock lobster industry in Western Australia.

The WRL fishery is a global leader in innovative, sustainable lobster management. The Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) is a non-profit incorporated organisation that represents the rock lobster industry in Western Australia. The Western Rock Lobster Fishery is iconic. It is the world’s first Marine Stewardship Certified (MSC) fishery and the largest wild caught commercial fishery in WA. The fishery is based on a single species — the spiny lobster (Panulirus Cygnus) — in an area along WA’s coast between Shark Bay and Cape Leeuwin. Western Australian rock lobster fishers are global leaders in sustainable fisheries management. The fishery is managed through an annual commercial catch quota system, which was introduced in 2008, with the total annual commercial catch capped at 6,300 tonnes. The Council was formed in 2001 to represent the industry on a variety of issues including changes to the management system of the Western Rock Lobster fishery, submissions to Government on behalf of the industry, sourcing funding for industry projects and engagement with Government on behalf of fishers. The Council is made up of a Board of eight directors, elected by Managed Fishery Licence holders, as well as two independent directors appointed by the Board.

🦞 DECK PROGRAM 2026 – A FANTASTIC FIRST DAY!

What a great start to Western Rock Lobster's 2026 DECK Program in Geraldton!

Day 1 featured a diverse lineup of speakers sharing valuable insights, knowledge and experiences, all aimed at supporting our fishers' professional development, building leadership skills and ultimately strengthening their fishing operations.

Following a full day of presentations and discussions, attendees enjoyed a fantastic conference dinner at Skeetas on the Geraldton foreshore, providing a great opportunity to relax, connect and share experiences.

👏 We're looking forward to another great day as Day 2 gets underway!

Following the program, WRL will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Industry Forum, with all fishers welcome and encouraged to attend, hear the latest updates and join the conversation.

A big thank you to our speakers and everyone involved in making Day 1 such a success!

450 KILOMETRES DOWN… 24 HOURS TO GO! 🚴‍♂️👏

A huge congratulations to Geraldton local Chris Ashton, who has just completed an incredible 450-kilometre bike ride from Geraldton to Perth, all in the name of raising funds for Telethon 2026!

But Chris isn't finished yet!

In just a few days, he'll be swapping the open road for a spin bike at RAC Arena, where he'll take on an extraordinary 24-hour continuous cycling challenge to raise much-needed funds for sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families across Western Australia.

Having spent much of his working life in WA's western rock lobster industry, from deckhand to skipper and now operating a carrier vessel servicing fishers around the Abrolhos Islands, Chris is someone we're particularly proud to support. We congratulate him on his determination, generosity and commitment to making a difference.

Chris is aiming to raise $20,000 for Telethon, and we'd love to see our fishing community and industry supporters get behind him!
