Born in Toowoomba and now based in Copenhagen, Steven’s musical journey has taken him from early training as an organist, pianist and cellist, to international acclaim as a conductor, repetiteur and vocal coach. With training from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the National Opera Studio, and the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Young Artist Program, Steven has worked with some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses across Europe and the US.

He is currently the chorus master of the Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen, and was knighted by Queen Margrethe of Denmark in 2020 for his work transforming her national opera chorus.⁣

Steven is currently back in Brisbane to conduct the upcoming concert 'A Sea Symphony' with Brisbane Chorale and Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.

THIS WEEKEND in the 4MBS Festival of Classics!

Farewell the festival with an intimate concert of Baroque favourites by Arioso Chamber Ensemble. From the heart-rending 'Lascia ch’io pianga' (Let me weep) from Handel’s opera 'Rinaldo', to the dramatic 'Frost' aria from 'King Arthur' by Purcell, this program of quintessential Baroque arias is sure to transport and delight audiences. Dance music from Purcell’s 'The Fairy Queen' and Rameau’s 'Danse des sauvages' will have audiences tapping their toes.

Countertenor Tobias Merz will be the vocalist (replacing Judit Molnar), and Jacqueline Webber perform baroque violin, (replacing Frank Fodor) as previously advertised.

Vanessa Tomlinson is a multi-award winning percussionist and composer, primarily engaged with exploratory, ecological sound practices. She has toured the world for 35 years, premiering hundreds of works by significant national and international composers, presenting work at major international festivals, and collaborating with improvisers, dancers, artists and more.

As of January 2026, she is also the Director of the Queensland Conservatorium, where she has been the Head of Percussion since 2003.

Hear Vanessa talk to 4MBS Broadcasts Manager Peter McCahon about her role at the Queensland Conservatorium and share some of her favourite music including excerpts from Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition', Ravel’s 'Sonata for Violin and Piano', Dvořák's 'Quintet in E Flat major', and one of Vanessa's own compositions.

Dr. Anne Levitskyis a scholar and performer of medieval vernacular song, in particular troubadour lyric poetry, and its connections to the larger cultural milieu of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. She is a graduate of Stanford University and earned her PhD in Historical Musicology from Columbia University in May 2018. At present, she is Lecturer in Music at the University of Queensland, and has taught previously at Columbia, Dixie State University (now called Utah Tech), and Stony Brook University.

Anne is also the founding member of Brisbane's professional early music ensemble Fractio Modi, which will be performing next weekend in the 4MBS Festival of Classics.

Internationally-acclaimed, ARIA-award winning mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell was born in Adelaide and is a graduate of The University of Adelaide. She has over eighty operatic roles in her repertoire and has performed on the concert platform and operatic stage in twenty-five countries. As a principal guest she has sung with Opera Australia, all of the State Opera companies and all of the major Australian symphony orchestras.

Sally-Anne’s many recordings include her solo operatic disc Enchanting, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Bach Arias and Duets, Mozart’s Requiem, Don John Of Austria, Top 100 ABC Concert Gala, Opera Australia’s Golden Jubilee/50th Anniversary, Prokofiev’s Love for Three Oranges, and The No 1 Classical Album 2007 and 2009 (DECCA). Sally-Anne has worked with Sir Bryn Trefel, Sumi Jo, Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Askenazy, Simone Young, Richard Gill, Richard Mills, and more.
