Sexual Violence Awareness Month is coming to a close, but conversations about sexual violence should continue.

This month we’ve shared a lot about sexual violence, support and prevention. And while awareness months give us an important opportunity to bring these conversations to the front, the work happens all year round.

It happens when we listen and believe. When we challenge harmful attitudes. When we talk openly about consent and respect. And when we stand alongside young people and support their right to feel safe.

Thanks for being part of the conversation this SVAM. Let’s keep it going.

Parliament House SVAM Art Event.

(NB – this post includes images connected to sexual violence and may be triggering – go gently and do what you need to look after yourself and be supported by others.)

This week some young people and members of the Zig Zag sexual assault team joined survivors, workers and supporters to mark Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) at Parliament House.

People gathered to view artworks created by survivors from all over the state. The message “No More Silence, Prevent Sexual Violence’ was clear in the images, writings and spoken words that were shared. It was a powerful afternoon that called all of us to keep using our voices and actions to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that feed this violence.

We are grateful to all the survivors who were brave enough to share their work over October – as part of this workshop and all the other workshops, social action and activities that Zig Zag and other organisations held.

Happy Intersex Awareness Day!

Today we celebrate intersex young people and intersex folk everywhere, in all the beautiful and diverse ways they show up in our communities.

This date marks a historic protest that took place on 26th October 1996 in Boston, USA to defend the rights of intersex people. This day continues to raise awareness of the issues that people born with intersex variations face and works to end shame, stigma and non- consensual medical interventions.

We’re proud to stand with intersex people today and every day!

We stand in solidarity with intersex folks and peer- led organisations working towards ensuring bodily autonomy, informed consent, and inclusive health and human services for intersex communities.

“No More Silence, Prevent Sexual Violence” – Brisbane city landmarks join in to raise awareness tonight!

As Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) continues, Brisbane city lights help remind us all to challenge attitudes and actions that contribute to sexual violence.

If you are around Brisbane city tonight then you might notice a number of the bridges and landmarks are lit up in the SVAM colour TEAL.

The Story Bridge, Victoria Bridge, Kangaroo Point Bridge and the Reddacliff Place sculptures Donna Marcus: Steam 2006 will all be shining bright in TEAL.

So if you are passing by, have a look, mention it to others, and you might even like to share a pic of it too! It is one more way to break the silence – to take some action to make this topic seen and to support survivor voices.

A big thank you to the students of Wavell SHS for sharing their thoughts, ides and reflections at our stall today!

As part of Mental Health Week, we were invited to connect with students through a “What does consent mean to you?” activity. It was wonderful to see so many thoughtful and insightful contributions.

Conversations like these play an important role in building understanding, respect and safer communities 💙

Zig Zag wants to say a big THANK YOU to Tyla at I Love Linen who organised a very generous donations of luxury 100% French Cotton sheets sets for Zig Zag's End of Year Party. Tyla also dedicated several of the sets to the workers at Zig Zag to thank us for the work we do each day. We couldn't do what we do without our community!
