Yarra Riverkeeper Association

Yarra Riverkeeper Association Yarra Riverkeeper Association is a community of like-minded citizens who advocate for the River. We lobby governments and we educate the community.

β€œWe advocate for the River: for green spaces, for water quality, for biodiversity, for the birds, animals, insects and reptiles along the River, for good planning decisions, for the tributaries, for the parklands, for appropriate recreation; and for an understanding of our river and its role in the life of the city of Melbourne. We tell the story of the River.” – Andrew Kelly, Yarra Riverkeeper

Did you know these floating wetlands do more than just look beautiful?

They provide valuable habitat for wildlife and serve as a reminder that nature can thrive, even in the heart of our city.

Have you been down to check out the floating wetlands lately?

The reeds along the Yarra, Birrarung are doing good work keeping some litter out of the river 🌿

Unfortunately, they can't stop everything. Most of what we found here was polystyrene, balls, plastic bottles, and one bike.

Polystyrene is one of the most damaging materials ending up in our waterways and a lot of it is coming straight from construction sites. It breaks into tiny pieces that are nearly impossible to remove and harmful to wildlife.

Did you know the Yarra, Birrarung's valleys at Jumping Creek Reserve are only 5 million years old? In geological terms, that makes it practically a newborn. 🌿

And those rapids you see along the Yarra, Birrarung? They're caused by stubborn cemented sandstone that the river is slowly eroding over time. The river is literally reshaping itself.

Thanks to Manningham Council for taking us through the ancient history of this incredible waterway. πŸ’š

Everyone has a story to share about the river.

When we share our stories, we create deeper understanding and forge pathways to collective action.

When we engage with decision-makers, we use science-backed evidence to support our advocacy and drive meaningful change.

We recently published our final recommendations for reducing polystyrene pollution in waterways and continue to advocate for practical solutions to protect the Birrarung.

We also work with First Nations people wherever possible to learn from their stories, experiences and connection to Country, helping deepen our understanding of the river and its cultural significance.

We can all be riverkeepers. Join us in keeping the Birrarung healthy, protected and loved.

Birrarung Riverfest is only possible because of community support. Donate today to help protect and celebrate the living Yarra, Birrarung β€” link in bio.

Our annual festival, Birrarung Riverfest, takes place during Poorneet (Tadpole Season) in the Wurundjeri calendar, commencing in 2026 on World Rivers Day.

This community-powered festival honours the Birrarung from source to sea, bringing together Traditional Owners, local councils, artists, educators, scientists and everyday river lovers.

Riverfest is a celebration of the river’s intrinsic values, but it is also an opportunity to learn about the pressures facing the Birrarung and the actions we can take together to protect it.

Your donation helps Yarra Riverkeeper Association deliver Birrarung Riverfest and continue our environmental advocacy, river education and stewardship for future generations.

We can all be riverkeepers. Join us in keeping the Birrarung healthy, protected and loved.

Walk 3 of 4 is here and this one is truly special 🌿

We're heading to Spadonis Reserve, Yering, a landscape in active renewal and home to the Buxton Gum, a eucalypt found naturally in only one other place on Earth.

Join Vicky Shukuroglou as she reveals the extraordinary eucalypts of this floodplain landscape and their role in a river system being carefully stitched back together. Wander restored billabongs, uncover the hidden lives of these ancient trees, and wrap up with morning tea and good conversation.

Spadonis Reserve is part of Yarra Ranges Council's Yering Billabongs Project, restoring 60 hectares of floodplain to reconnect the Birrarung to its ancient lands.
Proudly sponsored by Eucalypt Australia and supported by Melbourne Water
