The performances at tonight’s UPCOV Pasifika Awards brought the culture, the rhythm and the heart of the islands right here to Naarm 🔥🌺

From the vibrant multicultural bracket by , to the beautiful sounds of the Fijian trio, and the powerful harmonies of the Solomon Islands sister duo — every performance reminded us how rich and diverse our Pasifika cultures are.

Moments like this bring our community together in the best way — through movement, music and shared identity 💃🏽🎶

So proud to witness the talent within our people tonight.

Tonight we had the privilege of attending the first-ever UPCOV Pasifika Awards here in Naarm — and what a night it was! 🌺✨

As the Vice President of Pacific Connections, it means so much to be in spaces like this representing and celebrating the strength, talent and leadership of our Pasifika people.

With 65 individuals and groups nominated across 9 categories, the room was filled with excellence, inspiration and so much pride. From powerful speakers to beautiful moments shared across the evening — this event reminded us just how strong and connected our village is here in Naarm.

Pasifika Peoples stand in solidarity with First Nations Peoples. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

This NAIDOC Week, Pacific Connections honours the strength, sovereignty, and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

As Pasifika peoples living on unceded land, we walk alongside our First Nations brothers and sisters in the ongoing fight for justice, truth, and healing.

🌺 We celebrate this year’s theme: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.

“Siva is not just dance—it's identity, it’s story, it’s spirit.”

We were beyond blessed to have the Oriana Siva Academy grace our event with two powerful performances that set the tone for the evening. Their presence brought lagona loloto (deep emotion) to the room and reminded us that the heartbeat of Samoa still echoes through every ta’i (beat) and every siva.

Their artistry carried the agaga o le atunu’u (spirit of the homeland) and held space for all of us in the theatre to reflect on who we are and where we come from. To open the screening of Tinā with the traditional artform of siva Samoa was a beautiful way to honour both our ancestors and our present.

Fa’afetai tele lava to the incredible dancers and their leadership team. Your passion, discipline, and cultural pride lit up the night and left us inspired. May you continue to uplift and ignite tulagavae (foundations) for the next generation.

“O le fa'amoemoe e fa'atasia i tatou – the purpose is to bring us together.”

What an au fa'apitoa (special gathering) we shared on Monday, April 21st at Reading Cinemas in Dandenong. A sea of smiles, warmth, and unity filled the space as our community showed up and showed out for the private screening of Tinā — a Samoan film with deep cultural resonance.

This was more than just a movie night. It was a celebration of our measina (treasures): our stories, our people, our identity. It was an honour for Pacific Connections to host this event in the heart of South-East Naarm, where our Polynesian population continues to grow. We see so many events in the North and West—and while we love those too—ua oo i le taimi (the time has come) for the South East to shine.

To every aiga, friend, and supporter who attended—fa’afetai tele lava. Your presence reminded us why our stories matter and why we must continue to make space for our own narratives on screen.

REPOSTING FROM .kapahaka

On behalf of the ‘Hīkoi - Toitū Te Tiriti ki Nārama’ organising committee, we warmly invite you and your organisation to participate in our hikoi (march) this Sunday, 24th November, at 10am.
Starting Point:
On the invitation of some of our First Nations brothers and sisters we will be gathering at Camp Sovereignty (Kings Domain Resting Place) to begin our Hīkoi. This sacred site honors both the repatriation of Aboriginal whanau and the ongoing journey for justice and recognition of sovereignty.

Route:
From Camp Sovereignty, we will walk to the Shrine of Remembrance via Linlithglow Ave, St Kilda Rd and ANZAC Avenue. This route was chosen as a tribute to the shared history and connection between New Zealanders, Australians, Aboriginal, and Māori peoples who have fought side by side multiple times.
We remember how our ancestors left their homes and families, with many sacrificing their lives, to fight for a better future. As we walk this path, we remind ourselves of the importance of coming together in unity to continue our fight for recognition of sovereignty, and peace.
In solidarity with the activation of our whanau (family) back home in Aotearoa (New Zealand), who have walked from Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) to Paremata (Parliament), we are continuing this kaupapa (purpose) here in Naarm (Melbourne). We will be stopping at the Shrine steps to hold space for hīkoi participants, before breaking off and heading to the Treaty in the Park Festival in Werribee via train.

SEE YOU THERE

🌊 Tokelau Language Week 2024 🌊

This year’s Tokelau Language Week theme is all about Strengthening the Language of Tokelau through Everyday Conversations 🌺.

It’s a call to embrace the language in our daily lives, one phrase at a time.

Here’s how you can start using Tokelauan in everyday conversations:

Hello– “Mālō ni”
How are you? – “Ea mai koe?”
Please - "Fakamolemole"
Thank you – “Fakafetai”

Embrace these words and phrases throughout your day, and share them with friends and family to keep the language alive.

Language connects us to our roots and strengthens our identity – let’s celebrate it together! 💙
