Following the massacre which killed 19 and displaced another 653 people in Toboso, Negros in the Philippines, we ask ourselves to consider “why were they there?”

Bayan Australia and Anakbayan Melbourne will be hosting an educational discussion on the roots of land struggle in the Philippines, as well as the reasons youth and the broad Filipino masses are wanting to connect with and learn about the struggle back home.

Anakbayan Melbourne along with other progressive Filipino organisations and solidarity friends came together to demand justice and accountability for the massacre in Toboso, Negros Occidental that killed human rights and peasant advocates such as Alyssa Alano, RJ Ledesma, Errol Wendel, Maurern Santuyo, Lyle Prijoles, Kai Sorem, and many more.

The candlelight vigil that was held symbolised the collective commitment that the fighting citizens will never be silenced and will continue to demand justice for all victims of violence and violence of the state. Let us organise and stand in unity for the fight for land, to serve the oppressed and exploited people, and bring their just struggles to victory.

DEFEND NEGROS! Justice for the victims of Toboso massacre!
Anakbayan Melbourne statement

On April 19, the 303rd Infantry brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) killed 19 individuals and displaced 653 residents in the peasant communities of Toboso, Negros Occidental. Amongst those killed were University of the Philippines Diliman Student Councillor Alyssa Alano and Altermidya journalist, RJ Ladesma. Both were civilians immersing themselves in peasant communities, living and struggling with them as they daily toiled the vast sugar cane fields of Negros.

The AFP and the fascist US-Marcos regime are sorely mistaken in thinking that they can silence the people’s resistance, particularly that of the youth. We give the highest honours to the people’s martyrs who served the oppressed and exploited Filipino masses until their very last breath. Their blood waters the soil in which countless more will emerge, asserting the justice that has long been denied to the peasants of Negros and the entire Filipino people. They will forever serve as a beacon of inspiration to the thousands and millions of youth who are ever more determined to persevere along the path of the people’s struggle for genuine liberation.

As we mourn our martyrs, we also transform our grief into an undying resolve to continue what they left behind, to serve the oppressed and exploited people wholeheartedly and bring their just struggles to victory. Their lives which were lived in struggle with the marginalised lets us know that a new world is indeed possible, and in honouring their memory, we make the pledge of bringing it about.

ICYMI: Angelo, Vice Chairperson of Anakbayan Melbourne spoke at the EDSA People Power 40th Anniversary protest on Wednesday, February 25 held at Fed Square, Melbourne/Naarm.

“.. in this 40th anniversary of EDSA, we remember not a single day of revolt but the long lineage of resistance.

We must organize wherever we are. With the workers fighting for living wages. With the peasants who till land they do not own. With the urban poor whose communities remain besieged by inadequate housing and injustice. With the students who question the curriculum, resist budget cuts & tuition hikes. With the women who resist gender based violence and discrimination. With the migrants who demand protection and with all sectors confronting exploitation.

Our anger is not baseless. It is rooted in injustice. Our urgency is not impatience. It is born of generations of broken promises. And so we say firmly, resistance is not a crime. It is our right.

As long as exploitation and oppression exist, the youth will resist. As long as corruption rots the system, the youth will fight. As long as imperialism tightens its grip on our nation, the youth will rise.

The militant and revolutionary spirit of the Filipino youth did not end at EDSA. It lives on. And it marches forward today.”
