An indication that we are an ageing society is that unfortunately i need to advise of the passing of another squash player during the same week......
RIP Peter Kennedy - 8th May 1945 - 17th August 2026

Peter Kennedy passed away here in Canberra after a long illness last Monday the 17th.

Peter was a member of the Central squash club for many years, playing State 2 level during the 80's - when Central squash club became defunct, he came over to the Dickson squash club in 1988 where he played out his squash career until he became unable to play any longer. Peter's son Finian carries on Pete's tradition by taking up the sports as a Dickson Junior and teaming up with Peter in B4 grade during 2nd pennant of 1995 and going on to greater heights playing State 1.

Players of the time would recall Peter because he was good, but also because he had a strange stuttering serving stile, and he was the only player back then that used a fingerless glove on his serving right hand, and because they weren't freely available, he used to make them himself out of leather....saved himself a lot of new grips during his time

Peters' funeral will take place at Norwood Park crematorium Mitchell, this coming Monday the 31st August at 3.00pm

Finian will be organising a wake afterwards, he asks if you were going to help celebrate his dad Peters passing, give him a call, Finian on 0449539323 for catering purposes....and to say g'day....

The Dickson squash club wishes to inform Canberra squashies of the passing of "squash tragic" Trevor Smith 12/9/1931 - 21st August 2026 just short of his 95th birthday...and still playing squash up to the 12th August here at Dickson where he came off the court and stoically said to us that it may very well be his last hit out...

Below is some information that Peter Trainor collated and absorbed from Trevor over the many years during the breaks in play and many luncheons the Wednesday morning squash group had when they played together.

Born Sept 1931 in Kent, on the fringe of London. Joined the Merchant Navy as a teenager. Did National Service and then enlisted so he would get trained in a trade. I think his trade was initially Instrument Maker but he picked up a lot of other skills over the years. Was with the Royal Navy for years, then transferred to the Air Force. Worked for telephone companies like Siemens and STC doing telephone network installations in North Africa.

Came to Australia (1960s?) and worked for Defence as a civilian Technical Officer. Worked at different times in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (including Woomera Rocket Range). Had postings to the US (New England and California) working on teams liaising with the US military and contractors on ships under construction that Australia was buying from the Yanks.

Played squash everywhere he went - SRA, Masters, Thurs and Wed Daytime squash in Canberra. I think he was a very good player in his day but not top level. Even into his 90s he had great touch - very good at drop shots from the back of the courts and reverse boasts. He didn't wear glasses and if you threw a ball to him he could just sn**ch it out of the air every time.

He was a gentleman, always polite, very knowledgeable and loved to talk to people. In retirement he volunteered for a couple of organisations, I think COTA and the Commonwealth Superannuated Officers Association. He often lamented that he had been in a number of groups of retirees from his many workplaces which originally numbered 100s of people but were now down to a few - he had outlasted nearly all of them! His wife died about 25 years ago I think but he has a number of children (his eldest daughter, born in Tripoli, is over 70!), many grandchildren and he said "he has lost track of the number of great grandchildren".

Funeral notice will follow once it is established.

RIP Trevor Smith...an inspiration to all squash players near and far.....

Dickson Squash Club made a submission to the ACT Government Inquiry into barriers and opportunities for participation in community sports in the ACT. The Standing Committee on Economics, Industry and Recreation, which commissioned the inquiry, has now released its report and made recommendations to the government.

A bit of history of our Dickson squash club......outside the Dickson squash club adjacent to the entry of the famous "Finigans bar" i would estimate sometime during early 1978.... two of the siblings of the "Morell dynasty" (two more to follow) that have supported the club...even to this day, pictured are, i am certain is Rachel Morell and Mchael Morell junior biding their time while mum Adele and dad Michael senior were up in the squash courts playing in a day tournament, Michelle and Kristy were later added to the dynasty, the whole family played squash for both National and Dickson clubs, and to this day Michelles offsprings June and Huck are playing pennant for Dickson carrying on the family tradition....
