Some of our beautiful available dogs had an amazing time meeting with skaters from Canberra Roller Derby League teams the Surly Griffins and the Red Bellied Black Hearts over the weekend.

The next game of the roller derby season will be at 6pm Saturday 24 October 2026 at Evelyn Scott School, Denman Prospect. The Canberra Roller Derby League will generously be putting on a raffle to help raise money for ARF, and we'll have a little stall there too. Hope to see you there!

WI Ken Behrens!
What a weekend seeing all the dogs at Floriada having a wonderful day out with their owners. The weather was great and even saw some dogs enjoying the odd donut. Wouldn't it be amazing if our pound dogs could get adopted and enjoy that amazing life instead of being in a dog run waiting for a home. Adoptions have slowed to almost nonexistent and the pound is full of unwanted dogs most of which are lovely hounds that just need a family.
Long termers - Tigger who is a fun loving boy who has been at the pound 6mths is well and truly ready for that warm bed and tones of love. Lets get Tigger his wish.
adopted dogs - The wonderful Stella was struggling in the pound waiting for adoption so has now come into ARF and will go up for adoption soon
When visiting dogs at DAS, remember to take a few treats with you. When dogs first enter the yard, they often spend time sniffing and exploring all the exciting smells, or they may engage more with the handler they already know. This isn’t a reflection of the dog at all — they’ve just spent a lot of time in their run and are enjoying the open space.
Bringing treats can really help them engage with you and start building that all-important connection ❤️

Getting to know you - THOR

Each week we are intrducing our dogs who have been in care a bit longer than usual and today, that is Thor, complete with a video message from his foster kids.

And for our fabulous Q&A!!!

❓If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and how would you use it in your daily life?

🐾I’d choose the power to freeze time so I could sleep for 12 hours, eat all the snacks in the house, blame the mess on a ghost, and still have time to say, ‘Wasn’t me!’ before anyone noticed.

❓On walks, do you wander through the neighborhood reading all the peemail or do you stride ahead like you have places to go?

🐾On walks I’m definitely a professional peemail detective I have to sniff every single message, check the neighbourhood gossip, and leave a reply of my own. My human calls it a walk. I call it social media.

⁠❓What does your 4eva dream home look like and what makes it perfect for you?

🐾My dream forever home would have a backyard, a comfy couch, unlimited treats, and a sun filled backyard or window where I can stretch out and sunbake for hours like the little king I am. I would love someone to adventure with. My only house rules? No baths, no sharing snacks, and absolutely NO disturbing me during my beauty sleep!

❓What role would you play on your new family - supervisor, cuddler, comedian or something else?

🐾I’d be the household supervisor, professional cuddler, and full time comedian! 😂 I’ll follow you to the toilet, steal your spot on the couch, and make sure nobody eats anything without me conducting a thorough taste test first. Basically, I’d be the boss of the house you’d just be paying the mortgage!

❓What’s your idea of the perfect adventure and what makes it exciting for you?

🐾My perfect adventure is a trip to the beach or a swim in the river! Give me water to splash in, sand to dig up, and a few sticks to proudly carry around like I’ve discovered buried treasure. Now that’s exciting!

Getting to know you - SIMBA

We'd like you to get to know some of our dogs who have been in care for a bit longer than usual, and today we are meeting our gorgeous boy Simba. We will start with a fun little Q&A and a video to show you what a day in the life of Simba looks like!

❓What’s one silly habit that always gets a laugh?

🐾My chunky old man zoomies! They’re a great little stress release and I love to do them with a human. It only lasts for a little bit, but I feel so much better afterwards. If a human gets down low on the ground with me, I might do some play moves too.

❓When you pick up a toy, do you give it a gentle little nuzzle or dive into joyful fluff-liberating mode?

🐾I sometimes carry around a toy for a bit, maybe give it some gentle nib nibs, but that full de-fluffing is always on the agenda.

❓What treat makes you sit straighter and focus harder than usual, and what’s special about it?

🐾I love apple! I will wake from a sleep in a different room if I hear that delicious cronch cronch. You don’t need all that apple to yourself anyway.

❓What kind of human helps you feel understood and safe, and what do they do that makes a difference?

🐾I like a patient human who understands the needs of my breed mix and of an old doggo who may not have had the best life. A human who makes me feel safe is one who can read when I’m stressed, frustrated, or trying to communicate something else.

❓When it comes to learning, do you pick things up quickly or rely on your natural
charm and good looks — and how does your foster describe your style?

🐾I’m actually super smart and pick things up quickly. You might need to be a patient with me in busier environments. I’m super proud of my tricks though and I love to show them off. I hope I can learn more.
