Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The theme this year is 'Beyond awareness: Making elder abuse prevention work'.

According to Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald, 'Prevention involves taking early action, making informed decisions and putting strong protections in place. It also means recognising that dignity is inherent to all older people, and respecting their rights, choices and aspirations.’

Cairns Community Legal Centre would like to thank CRDVS for hosting the annual DFV Month Breakfast at Pullman Cairns International.

It was a valuable opportunity for our sector and community to come together to reflect, learn, and strengthen our collective response to domestic and family violence.

National Reconciliation Week 2026

This year’s theme, “All In,” reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility — not just during National Reconciliation Week, but every day.

At Cairns Community Legal Service, we recognise that meaningful reconciliation requires action, listening, respect, and a commitment to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the pursuit of justice, equity, and self-determination.

As a community legal and social support service, we are committed to creating culturally safe spaces, strengthening partnerships with community, and advocating for fair and accessible support for all.
Reconciliation is not a spectator sport. We all have a role to play.

In celebration of National Pro Bono Day, and to raise much-needed funds to support access to justice for disadvantaged Queenslanders, the Cairns Community Legal Centre was proud to join fellow local lawyers in the Queensland Legal Walk 2026.
Justice Henry set a cracking pace for the 5km walk along our stunning Cairns Esplanade!

A big thank you to LawRight Qld for organising such a successful and engaging fundraising event, and to Mission Australia NQ and Anglicare NQ Ltd for providing coffee and breakfast after the walk.

On 6 May 2026, our community came together for the CRDVS Candle Lighting Vigil to honour and remember those whose lives have been lost to domestic and family violence.

Each candle represented a life taken too soon, a family forever changed, and a community committed to saying enough is enough. We stand with victim-survivors, families, advocates, and frontline workers who continue to fight for safety, dignity, and justice.

Domestic and family violence affects people across every age, background, and community. Behind every statistic is a person who deserved to live free from fear and harm.

Today, we remember those we have lost, we support those still living with violence, and we renew our commitment to creating safer communities for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who attended the vigil, shared in reflection, and helped shine a light on this important issue.

Last Friday, some of our team had the opportunity to attend the FNQ Domestic & Family Violence Symposium 2026.

It was a powerful and insightful day, hearing from speakers across the legal, court, and intervention sectors about coercive control, men’s behaviour change, and strengthening responses to domestic and family violence.

We’re grateful for the chance to learn from such experienced practitioners and to continue building our knowledge to better support the people we work with every day.

Thank you to the organisers and speakers for such an important event.
