The Student Hub is here to help the Cairns student community!

Contact us for local information and support to help you make the most of your experience studying and living in Cairns. The Cairns Student Hub is managed by Study Cairns as a supportive environment that aims to enhance the international student experience in Cairns. Supported by Trade and Investment Queensland, Cairns Regional Council, educational institutions and local business, the Student Hub forms the centre piece of a thriving student community. Located in the heart of Cairns city, the Student Hub provides a welcoming space for students to utilise as a space to connect with fellow students, colleagues and the wider student community. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Student Hub builds on the Cairns International Student Engagement program, which ensures international students feel both welcome and safe, and experience a strong sense of belonging to the local community throughout their stay in Cairns. The Cairns International Student Engagement program improves the experience of international students studying and living in Cairns. It provides a connected network of touch points for students so they feel supported and can make the most of their time in the region. Other initiatives of this program are The International Student Friendship Ceremony, Airport Welcome Desks, student and community integration programs, collection of data and research on student needs, and marketing activities. Additionally, a Student Internship Program is under development and Volunteering opportunities are available at the Student Hub.

🌴 Connecting Through Conversation at the Student Hub!

Our English Conversation & Student Networking Session was a lovely opportunity for international students to come together, practise their English and build new connections.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an afternoon of meaningful conversations, shared experiences and getting to know fellow students in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

From discussing everyday English and life in Cairns to sharing experiences of balancing study and work, students had the chance to learn from one another, exchange ideas and discover that they have more in common than they might think.

A big thank you to our Student Ambassadors, Saki and Stanka, for helping facilitate the session and sharing their own experiences and helpful advice on navigating student life, managing study commitments and making the most of opportunities in Cairns.

Sessions like these are a great reminder that building confidence in a new environment starts with small conversations and meaningful connections.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming a new group of international students to the Student Hub as they settle into life in Cairns.

Starting life in a new city can be both exciting and challenging, and orientation is a valuable opportunity for students to begin finding their way around, meet others, and learn about the people, services and opportunities that are part of the Cairns community.

It was great to spend time with our newest students, hear about where they have come from and introduce them to the support and activities available through the Student Hub.

Important Update for International Students

Important changes to Australia’s Student visa and student transfer rules came into effect from 2 October 2026.

These changes may affect international students who are planning to apply for another Student visa, change education providers, or include family members in their visa application.

Key changes include:
• New requirements affecting some Student visa applications lodged from within Australia
• Changes affecting partners and dependent children
• Changes to student transfer restrictions for non-school international students
• Transitional arrangements for applications lodged before 2 October 2026

Before changing providers, enrolling in another course or making decisions about your visa, make sure you understand how the new requirements may apply to your individual circumstances.

Study Cairns will soon be hosting an online information seminar to help students and education providers better understand these changes and what they may mean in practice.
