We lost a mighty Lion this week.

Les Johnson was a Lions institution, a tireless member of our small club, and for many others over his long lifetime (for which he was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship award). For a many years he acted either as our club’s president, our treasurer or secretary as the need arose. A bon vivant, who delighted in bringing people together (particularly over a glass or two of something sustaining) Les was kind and funny, and always generous with his time. He was a force of nature.

Les and his wife Margaret moved to Corowa several years ago where they continued to contribute to their community through the Lions Club there. We offer our deepest condolences to Margaret and the rest of the family.

We couldn’t do what we do for the Bundanoon community, or the wider one for that matter, without the help of our village’s businesses. We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge two in particular.

We bid farewell to The Bundanoon Newsagency this week. They have always been very generous supporters of Bundanoon Lions Club over many many years. We’d like to thank them for providing us with space to run our raffles and cake sales. We wish them well as they explore new horizons.

We recently awarded Bundanoon’s butcher Anthony “Hoppy” Smith with a Lions Club Certificate of Appreciation to thank him for his great support of the Bundanoon Lions Club for so many years. Thanks to him Lions Christmas Cakes are available in the village all year round.

Somehow it’s August already. Winter’s nearly done (all climatic evidence to the contrary) so it must be nearly time to start your Spring decluttering. Lions Recycle for Sight is an initiative designed to deliver used glasses to those in need and also reduce landfill. For over twenty years the program has delivered close to twenty million pairs of quality refurbished spectacles to men, women and children in need across the world. You’ll find a Lions Recycle for Sight collection box at The Good Yarn, the Bundanoon Post Office and at the front desk of Warrigal. We’ll also have a collection box at the next Bundanoon Markets.

Not need to wait until December to enjoy a slice of Lions famous Christmas cake. We’ll have them for sale at the next two Bundanoon markets - this weekend and on the 19th. Or you can always grab one from the Bundanoon Butchery where they’re available all year round.

Bundanoon Lions gather for dinner every month, to strengthen the bonds of our friendship over a bite to eat. Once a year this event includes some additional formalities, as the outgoing President hands over the reigns to the incoming one. We also take the opportunity to recognise the outstanding service of some members during the past year. Gongs went to Lion Peter Goulding, for his outstanding work as our Christmas Cake Tsar, his wife Kerrie (for bringing us one of our most successful events, Dogs Day Out) and Lion Grant Perkins for the extra effort he’s put in on keeping our Big Yellow Trailer n tip-top shape. Outgoing Secretary, Lion Elizabeth Cranny, was recognised for her sterling work in that role.

We thank Lion Geoff Hobart for his outstanding leadership over the past year, and Lion Elizabeth Cranny for once again taking up the challenge to lead us this year.

A reminder for those planning to attend the dawn service here in Bundanoon on Saturday morning. We’ll have free bacon and egg rolls, and a cuppa on hand afterwards for the hardy early risers. If you’d like to say thanks we won’t say no … any donations made will go to Soldier On who deliver holistic support services that enable current and former Australian Defence Force personnel, and their families, to lead meaningful civilian lives.

Wasn’t Saturday a fabulous day? Another brilliant Brigadoon. Thanks to the organisers, and to everyone who turned out and chose to sample our barbecue (and thanks too to Bundanoon Butchery for the delicious snags).

Bundanoon local Kerri was the lucky winner of the always amazing Bundanoon Lions Scotch Raffle. Thanks to Pioneer Flask for their support.

We’re already looking forward to next year. See you then (when you’ll have another chance to win some scotch!).
