They are our mothers.
Our daughters.
Our sisters.
Our cousins.
Our friends.
OUR CHILDREN.
In over just 48 hours in September, three women and one child lost their lives to domestic and family violence.
And across Australia:
1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.
1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

Behind every statistic is a life. Women and children whose lives have been taken by violence. Women and children whose stories must not be forgotten.

On 25 November, we will gather in Martin Place for Unite Against Violence: No More Empty Shoes to honour and remember those whose lives have been taken and to stand together for a future where this is no longer accepted as inevitable.

How many more lives?
How many more empty shoes?
We cannot accept this as inevitable. We need change. We need action. We need an end to violence.
Stand with us. Stand against violence.

Thank you to Eeva, who after hearing about Pop In, decided to team up with her friends to hold a stall, raising funds and collecting physical donations for Pop In.

We've all heard the news stories. We've seen the stats. But these are not just stats. Behind every statistic is a woman. A mother. A daughter. A sister. A friend. A child.

Women and children whose lives have been taken by violence. Women and children whose stories must not be forgotten.

On 25 November, Pop In and 51 frontline organisations will stand together in Martin Place for Unite Against Violence: No More Empty Shoes, to remember the women and children we have lost to domestic and family violence over the past 12 months, and to call for the changes needed to make things better for victim-survivors.
This is part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Sometimes the signs are subtle, and can be mistaken for illness or simply part of ageing.

Noticing a sign does not necessarily mean someone is experiencing abuse,but it can be a reason to check in, listen and take notice.

If you’re concerned about an older person, taking the time to ask how they’re going and offering support can make a difference.

Significant sporting events can lead to an increase in domestic violence-related incidents and demand for support services.

For some women and children, Grand Final weekend can be a time of increased risk.

A football game should never come at the cost of someone’s safety.

We can all play a part in creating safer communities, by challenging disrespect, checking in on the people around us and taking concerns about someone’s safety seriously.

On Thursday 26 November, Pop In will bring our community together at The Briars Inn, Burradoo for Beyond the Silence - Light the Night.

A night to remember those we have lost, stand alongside those experiencing domestic violence and abuse, and make one message clear:

We say NO to domestic violence and abuse.

This year, our Southern Highlands vigil is also part of a growing movement, with communities across rural and regional NSW coming together on the same night behind this shared message.
