💬 'We gather at a moment when the concept of health security is being tested like never before'... 'The solutions will not come from any single discipline, any single institution or any single country.'

Spoken by Dr. Revati Phalkey, Director of the United Nations University Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH), in our Welcome Plenary at GHS2026 in Kuala Lumpur.

Her words set the tone for four days of dialogue between government, international organisations, civil society, academia, defence and the private sector, a reminder that health security is, by nature, a shared endeavour.

As we look ahead to GHS2028, this message feels more relevant than ever.

🐾 Today is World Rabies Day.

Rabies is almost entirely preventable, yet it still claims tens of thousands of lives each year, disproportionately affecting children and communities in Africa and Asia with limited access to vaccines and post-exposure treatment.

Eliminating rabies requires strong surveillance, accessible vaccination for both animals and people, and coordinated action across the human, animal and environmental health sectors.

Today, we recognise the researchers, health professionals and communities working towards a world free of rabies deaths.

🦟 Today is World Mosquito Day.

Mosquitoes may be small, but the diseases they transmit - including malaria, dengue, Zika and chikungunya - continue to affect communities worldwide.

Preventing mosquito-borne disease requires strong surveillance, early detection, effective public health systems and collaboration across borders.

Today, we recognise the researchers, health professionals and communities working to reduce the global impact of mosquito-borne diseases.

🌐 Two months on from , we have been reflecting on the scale and diversity of the global community that joined us in Kuala Lumpur.

We are incredibly proud to have welcomed more than 1,200 delegates from 88 countries, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, sectors and regions.

Across 123 panels and 10 plenary sessions, this diversity created opportunities to exchange knowledge, share different perspectives and strengthen connections across the global health security community.

💬 We are inspired to see the conversations and connections formed at GHS2026 continuing well beyond the Conference, strengthening collaboration across the global health security community.

🌎 GHS2026 brought together leaders, experts and changemakers from across the world to strengthen our collective response to health security challenges.

As keynote speaker Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme reflected:

'Much of the work that underpins health security is quiet and often unseen. It takes place every day within national public health agencies, laboratories and institutions around the world, frequently without recognition or celebration.

But this work is essential. It is how we ensure that, when a response is needed, we have the people, capacity, infrastructure, laboratories and networks ready to come together and act as one.

Health security is not only about responding to the challenges of today; it is about preparing for the future. This community, and this conference, remind us of the responsibility we have to one another, and of the importance of continuing this work long before a crisis reaches its trigger point.'
