🛠️ New Tools, from our besties at Plantfulness! 🌱

Big love to the legends at plantfulness who donated a fresh batch of gardening tools to YWNA!

If you’ve ever been to one of our working bees and wrestled someone for the last trowel, you know how desperately we needed this 😅

Plantfulness is a charity that supports community wellbeing through gardening and nature connection. We’re thrilled partner with them and can’t wait to welcome them to the reserve for a planting session soon! 🌿

What a big weekend for YWNA! 🌱🐸💦

We kicked things off with a stinking hot working bee ☀️ where we started cleaning the seeds we've spent all spring and summer collecting. We also gave our plants a little TLC, weeding them in preparation for the upcoming planting season.

Then on Sunday, we ran our first Waterwatch of the year! 💧 It was great to see lots of new faces alongside familiar ones. We’re hoping to show just how much of a positive impact the reserve is having on water quality. One thing we can already tell you—there were so many more aquatic critters in the ponds than in Elster Creek! 🦐🐛

But that wasn’t all… the community delivered ROCKS. SO many rocks! 🪨💪 A massive effort to help our Growling Grass Frogs, who are sincerely grateful. Heading into winter was looking a little scary, as chytrid fungus, which is devastating frog populations nationwide, is destroyed by warm temperatures. These rocks will help heat the water, create basking spots, and give the frogs a fighting chance. 🐸🔥

A huge thank you to everyone who made this weekend possible! 🙌💚

🌿 Working Bee This Saturday! 🌿

We're keeping it cool with some light shed activities:

🌱 Duma propagation
🌾 Weeding tube stock
🌻 Seed cleaning

We'll finish up a little earlier so we don’t get cooked 🥵 and wrap it up with a delicious morning tea! 🍰☕

See you there

While most of us were still asleep at 7:15 am on Saturday, 8th February, the incredible bird survey crew was already out spotting our feathered friends!

They recorded an impressive 455 birds across 32 species—almost 34, but the Baillon’s Crake on the lake and a group of Galahs arrived just a little too late for the official tally.

Flocks of lorikeets, Silver Gulls, Australian Wood Ducks, and Welcome Swallows filled the sky, while a strong teal presence on the canal helped boost the count.

A huge thanks to Sue Foster for organising and to Tania Ireton, BirdLife Bayside president, for leading the survey.

Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve bird survey  8th February 2025 Saturday, 8th February started off cloudy, but the birds didn’t seem to mind! This was one of the highest bird counts we've recorded since July 2024. A total of 455 birds across 32 species were counted—almost 34, but the Baillon’s C...
