Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library

Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library The Kadimah is a Jewish, secular, cultural organisation and library and an important Yiddish oriented, Jewish organisation in Melbourne, Australia.

The Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library was established in Melbourne in 1911 by newly arrived Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe as a “home away from home”, in an alien Anglo country far away from their families and everything that was familiar to them. Originally situated in Carlton, its leaders had the foresight to move, with the Jewish population of Melbourne, to Elsternwick

in the 1960's

Before and after World War 2, the Kadimah, was a refuge for those escaping and surviving the Holocaust, providing a full range of educational and social programs, an inspiration for maintaining their culture and a support for settlement in a new strange country. In the 1990s, the Kadimah performed the same role for newly arrived Jewish people from the Soviet Union, and also nourished a vibrant Yiddish youth theatre. In the early 2000s the Kadimah’s focus was on seniors’ programs. This ability to change with the times is one reason why the Kadimah is still here

From Rokhl Holzer to Evelyn Krape to Ziggy Resnick.

Three generations. One living culture.

Rokhl Holzer helped shape the golden era of Kadimah Yiddish Theatre directing and performing, wowing the audiences with her talent.

Evelyn Krape has spent a lifetime on Australia’s stages, winning Green Room Awards and bringing Yiddish stories to new audiences as Artistic Director of Kadimah Yiddish Theatre and performing in Yentl, among other plays.

Today, Ziggy Resnick carries that tradition forward. A performer with Belvoir and Bell Shakespeare, Ziggy was so moved by Yentl that they are now preparing to take their place on the Kadimah Yiddish Theatre stage as the 2026 recipient of the Rokhl Holzer & Paula Boltman Scholarship.

This is what your support makes possible.

Not just preserving memories, but creating futures.

Please support Kadimah’s EOFY Appeal and help ensure the next generation of artists can learn, create and perform in Yiddish.
