Week two of our online Anime & Manga Drawing Series, and this time we were exploring the world of Kawaii animals!

We started by breaking down the basics, looking at different body shapes, head shapes, eyes and facial expressions, and how small changes can give a character its own personality.

Rather than simply copying a finished drawing, participants experimented with different elements before mixing and matching their favourites to create their own unique Kawaii animals.

It's always fun seeing how everyone interprets the same techniques differently. A few simple shapes can turn into so many different characters!

Another lovely Sunday spent drawing, experimenting and getting creative online.

I've been working on Continuum for the past few months, and it's exciting to see the pieces of it gradually coming together.

For those who haven't come across it yet, Continuum is a new platform celebrating choreographers aged 40+, creating opportunities for seasoned dance makers to explore ideas, revisit work, experiment and continue evolving their artistic practice.

I'm particularly excited to have a fantastic arts organisation supporting the project as we work towards our first iteration in 2027.

There's still plenty happening behind the scenes, and I can't wait to share more as things develop.

A dedicated website and Instagram account are also in the works, both launching soon, where you'll be able to follow the journey, meet artists and see how the project unfolds.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes!

Last weekend, I took part in a festival here in Melbourne, where I was supposed to be hosting an adult movement workshop exploring my choreographic practice through fun movement prompts and live music.

Then parents started arriving with their kids so, I had to pivot pretty quickly.

After years of teaching and facilitating, I’ve built up a huge archive of exercises, games and creative ideas that I can pull from when a session suddenly changes, and adapt them to suit the people, space and occasion.

Luckily, the musician I was working with is also a brilliant improviser, so we changed direction together and just went with it.

Sometimes experience is simply knowing when to let go of the plan.

Our Anime & Manga Drawing Series kicked off online last weekend, and we started right at the beginning, breaking down how an anime character is actually constructed.

We explored different face shapes, eye styles, noses, mouths and hair before moving on to simple ways of building the body and working out proportions.

Rather than everyone copying the same finished character, participants could mix and match the different elements we’d practised, choosing their own face shape, eyes, hairstyle, features and body, and bring them together to start creating a completely original character.

No matter what I’m teaching, one of my favourite parts of facilitating is connecting with the people in the room.

I might arrive with a workshop plan, techniques to share and a structure for the session, but I never want creativity to feel like there’s only one “right” way to do something.

For me, teaching is about creating enough structure for people to feel supported, while leaving enough space for their own ideas, personalities and creativity to come through.

Whether I’m teaching dance, visual art, writing, sound or something completely different, I’m not interested in everyone producing exactly the same result.

I want to give people tools, then see what they do with them.

Often, those unexpected choices, conversations and completely different interpretations are the best part of the session.

Last weekend, we hosted an online Watercolour Fan Painting Workshop, creating a floral-inspired design to celebrate the start of warmer days and spring here in Melbourne.

We worked with watercolours to build and blend the different layers of colour, then introduced markers to help shape the design, add definition and bring out some of the finer details.

Watercolour gives you those softer, less predictable washes and blends, while the markers allow you to come back in afterwards and play with line, shape and detail.

Rather than aiming for something perfectly uniform, we embraced the variations that come with painting by hand. particularly when working across the folds of a fan.

There’s something about being alone in a studio that I’ve always loved.

No audience. No costumes. No pressure to perform. Just space, movement and the opportunity to listen to what your body wants to do.

After so many years of classical ballet, where movement was built around precision, technique and a very specific vocabulary, my relationship with dance has changed enormously. These days I’m much more interested in what happens when I allow movement to be awkward, grounded, fragmented or unpredictable.

I still carry all of that classical training with me. I don’t think it ever really leaves your body, but I’m no longer interested in making everything look beautiful.

Sometimes the most interesting movement comes from letting it be a little strange.

Last week we streamed all the way to the UK for another creative online workshop!

This time, we were painting our own doormats, experimenting with acrylic paint, sponges and paintbrushes to build up our designs and work with the textured surface of the mat.

This design belongs to one of our participants, who created it during the session.

We recently hosted one of our Percussion Playground workshops for a psychology firm as part of their team-building day. They’d taken over a w**e shop for the day and, with Melbourne giving us some lovely warm weather, we moved the session into the courtyard.

We started together, exploring rhythms from around the world and learning some simple techniques as a group. Then we changed things up.

Everyone split into smaller teams and each group was given a completely different story prompt. Their challenge was to interpret it through rhythm and sound, using the percussion techniques they’d just learned to create their own short piece.

This was quite a reserved group to begin with, so there were definitely a few hesitant faces when we explained what they were going to do!

Once everyone got going, the ideas started coming, people became much more playful, and there was a lot of laughter. By the time each group performed their piece, you could see how much fun many of them were having.

A great reminder that team building doesn’t always need to involve talking about teamwork. Sometimes you just need to give people a slightly unusual challenge and permission to make some noise.

A little bit of spring creativity this afternoon.

We hosted an online Paper Parasol Painting Workshop, with our participant creating this beautiful floral design from home.

With spring well and truly here in Melbourne, we focused on flowers, leaves and botanical details while exploring different painting techniques from building up simple shapes and layering colour to creating brushstrokes that give petals and foliage a more natural, hand-painted feel.

We love that the techniques are there to guide you, but the finished design is always your own.
