Education and community building are at the heart of what we do. Connecting people, creating opportunities, challenging disadvantage.

CNLC provides a program which includes community strengthening, English and literacy courses, IT courses, nationally recognised training, information and referral, and offers hire of community spaces. Programs are delivered at the centre and other sites such as the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, and Carlton Housing Estate.

Today we welcomed a group of Deakin University students for a visit to our community garden in Carlton 🌱🤝

The visit gave students a chance to see our community-led programming up close, including our work on food security, and learn about the impact we're achieving in our local community.

We always value the chance to connect with students who are curious about grassroots, community-driven work — thank you for visiting, Deakin! 🧡

We have pickles for sale! 🥒

Come down to the neighbourhood centre and grab yourself a jar of these delicious pickles, made with love by local eateries 💚

There are plenty of yummy jars of kimchi and zucchini pickles (and more) to choose from! They will make a beautiful addition to your kitchen or a thoughtful gift for someone you love.

Large jars are $22, and smaller jars are $6. All proceeds go back into supporting CNLC's community programs. Pop in during our opening hours to grab some.

Today's workshop: a chat about the ecosystem around food waste and local gardens, and the part played by contributors like food venues and locals living near compost hubs like ours.

And it wouldn't be right if we didn't get our hands dirty and share a seasonal snack at the end of it all. 🌱

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Joaninho dos Reis, Program Manager from the Aileu Resource and Training Centre, to Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre, along with Chico dos Santos and Chris Adams from Friends of Aileu.

Their visit focused on sharing ideas and learning about community-led programs that could help inform and inspire work back in Timor-Leste. We toured our community garden, food relief market and English language (EAL) classes, before introducing them to our Garden Officer, Nesbert, who shared more about how the garden and food programs work together.

The highlight? Our visitors didn't just observe – they rolled up their sleeves and volunteered alongside our team at today's food market, helping distribute fresh produce to local community members.

It was a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, build connections and learn from one another. Community development is stronger when we share what works, listen to different experiences and work together across borders.

A big thank you to Joaninho, Chico and Chris for visiting us. We look forward to continuing the friendship between our communities.

Farewell to our local MP, Tim Read MP.

This Wednesday, Tim Read will give his farewell speech to Parliament after eight years representing Brunswick.

Over the years, Tim has been a warm and consistent presence at CNLC — visiting regularly, supporting our programs, and championing neighbourhood houses like ours as vital community spaces. We're grateful for his genuine interest in what we do and the people we serve.

A huge thank you to everyone who came through and supported the Coming Together Gathering yesterday! 🧡

It was a great turnout, a good feed and plenty of connection. Heaps of chat was going down and new relationships being formed — a great snapshot of who is in our neighbourhood, and what it looks like when we focus our energy together.

Big thanks to CAN for hosting us and opening up their space as the venue for the day.

This gathering was one of the first steps in our Food Security in Carlton 5-Year Action Plan — bringing people together, sharing a meal, and starting the work of making sure everyone in our community can find local, affordable, healthy food when they need it.

A big thanks to Melbourne Uni for providing the funds to kickstart what we hope is the first of many such events, and congratulations to City of Melbourne for launching their new food map for Carlton. The food map is a practical guide for the places in Carlton people can access free meals or pantry items.

And thank you to Nes and Taryn from our CNLC team who co-ordinated the event, working with local residents and our Carlton Community Network partners, including:

Launch of the ‘Your Voice in Democracy’ video series at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre Inc.

The video project focuses on empowering local community members to engage with parliament and be actively involved in civic life.

The launch was attended by community members involved with the project, along with Legislative Council President Shaun Leane MP.

It’s one of several civic partnership projects being supported across our state by Parliament of Victoria and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria.
