Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre Inc Education and community building are at the heart of what we do. Connecting people, creating opportunities, challenging disadvantage.

CNLC provides a program which includes community strengthening, English and literacy courses, IT courses, nationally recognised training, information and referral, and offers hire of community spaces. Programs are delivered at the centre and other sites such as the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, and Carlton Housing Estate.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tim Read, our local State MP for Brunswick, a regular visitor to CNLC and a great supporter of our work and our community. Just a few weeks ago, despite being very unwell, Tim joined us to speak at the graduation of our Climate Voices class, and only a few days ago he made a donation to CNLC. Working for his community with compassion and kindness to the last. Vale Tim Read.

📢 School Holiday Opening Hours at CNLC

Term 3 is wrapping up, and our holiday hours will look a little different!

🔒 Mon 21 – Fri 25 September: CNLC will be closed

📚 Mon 28 Sept – Fri 2 Oct: No classes running, but the centre will be open if you need to contact us

✅ Mon 5 October: Classes and regular programs resume — we can't wait to see everyone back!

It's always a joy hosting curious young minds and sharing what grows (and happens) at our community garden 💜

Earlier this week, we welcomed Grade 5 students from Balwyn North Primary School who are on camp in the Melbourne CBD to learn about all the great things happening in the city!

As part of their inquiry into food systems and leadership in the , they heard about the work we do at our CNLC and came to see our beautiful community garden for themselves 🐝

The students met our chickens, took a tour of the garden, and got to taste and smell some of our bush foods — strawberry gum was the clear favourite 🍃

They also learned about how CNLC supports our Carlton community more broadly with food security initiatives.

Our community garden is thriving this spring 🫜✨

The Wurundjeri season we’re now entering is Poorneet season (tadpole season) - a special time when temperatures rise and then rain eases !

Tadpoles are becoming more active, flax lilies are starting to flower and the days/nights are equally long 🌗

Feel free to pop into our CNLC community garden for a chat and to soak up the sun! There’s plenty to learn 🌸

Celebrating our students for 🎊 🍉

We had a beautiful lunch in our community garden, with music and even some dancing 💃 Then our students ran amazing activities to show off their skills in coffee making, sketching, fruit carving, and henna.

This week we completed our sixth Climate Voices program 👏 🎉

110 people have now graduated from the 10-week program.

It can be hard to know where to start with having your voice heard in our democracy. Since 2024, our Yarra Climate Voices program has given 110 passionate people the vital tools to take positive climate action!

What a wonderful day out with our All Abilities group!

We visited the magnificent State Library, had lunch outside in the sunshine, then headed off for some tenpin bowling.

And there was plenty to celebrate. Happy birthday to Dorothy (can you work out which team she barracks for?), who also came third in the footy tipping! Congratulations to Anne in second place and our 2026 footy tipping winner, Prue! 🎉🏆

Today we welcomed a group of Deakin University students for a visit to our community garden in Carlton 🌱🤝

The visit gave students a chance to see our community-led programming up close, including our work on food security, and learn about the impact we're achieving in our local community.

We have pickles for sale! 🥒

Come down to the neighbourhood centre and grab yourself a jar of these delicious pickles, made with love by local eateries 💚

There are plenty of yummy jars of kimchi and zucchini pickles (and more) to choose from! They will make a beautiful addition to your kitchen or a thoughtful gift for someone you love.

Large jars are $22, and smaller jars are $6. All proceeds go back into supporting CNLC's community programs. Pop in during our opening hours to grab some.
