This is important news.
We will be finding out the details and advocating with the various land holders for the best outcomes for these precious areas.

Victoria's wetlands are getting stronger protection. 🌿

The Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar site has been expanded by 1,400 hectares. The site now covers 24,110 hectares.

The expansion will help protect:

• important habitat for migratory shorebirds. 🦆
• threatened species and waterbird populations. 🐦
• native wetlands and vegetation. 🌿

Wetlands are important for people and nature. They support wildlife, improve water quality and store carbon.

This expansion will help protect Victoria's unique coastal environment and the species that depend on it for generations to come.

Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre will host its annual general meeting on Tuesday 20th October and as Pamela Sutton-Legaud has decided to step down as chair, we will have a change in our leadership. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports the Wetlands Centre online and in person at our open days and nature walks, our members, sponsors and donors and everyone who loves birds and nature particularly in and around Hobsons Bay. Keep loving our birds and get your friends involved. We are so fortunate to have wonderful wetlands and waterways together with the birds and beasties that inhabit them. PS: you can join as a member for just $20 a year! https://www.givenow.com.au/membership/3

Want to know what's going on with the World's Birds? Here is an amazing (and sad) report from BirdLife International on The State of the World's Birds. It is disappointing we are losing so many of our migratory birds. But I know there is great enthusiasm and support for them in Australia and around the world. View the inter-active report here. It makes for fascinating reading around World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD).

Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day wherever you are! 🐦

The mini collection of downloadable virtual backgrounds features the World Migratory Burd Day 2026 Ambassador Birds and theme "Every Bird Counts – Your Observation Matter!', beautifully brought to life by Luísa Lacerda through her colourful embroidery.

📣Raising awareness about migratory birds helps us better understand the challenges they face and the importance of protecting the places they depend on along their journeys. Whether you’re joining a meeting, hosting a webinar, or just want to bring a little more nature to your screen, these backgrounds are a fun and easy way to celebrate migratory birds and help spread the word.
