๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’™ It's International Dog Day! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿถ

Samantha was clearly doing some important relationship-building at a recent member engagement event, making friends with this adorable future four-legged officer.

If, like us, you're a little dog-obsessed, don't forget that our police dog teddies are available on our website. They're guaranteed to stay off the furniture, won't chew your shoes, and are always ready for cuddles!

Following the death of someone close, parents are often concerned about how to best support and meet the needs of their children. Like adults, children experience, express and process grief in a variety of ways depending on their age, stage of development, personality, family culture, understanding of death, past experiences of loss and the context of their bereavement. When considering how best to provide support, the childโ€™s unique grieving needs should also be considered.

Children of primary school age are beginning to understand the concept that death is permanent, though younger school-aged children may engage in โ€˜magicalโ€™ thinking, trying to outwit death. Due to a limited understanding of death, primary school-aged children may also have an increased fear in regards to their own death or feel responsible for the deceasedโ€™s death.

How can you help younger children to navigate their grief experience?
- Listen and talk with them
- Include them
- Provide safety and security
- Provide opportunities for expression
- Allow for a range of responses to loss
- Provide opportunities for memorialisation and connection
- Support yourself
- Seek help from a professional

"Congratulations on your retirement!" A phrase most retired people will have heard a multitude of times, and retirement can certainly be a joyful time filled with family, travel, hobbies and a sense of freedom and relief. It can also bring feelings of uncertainty, loneliness, and loss. There is a normal period of adjustment for anyone beginning their retirement, but for police officers and other emergency services workers, there can be unique issues due to their style of work. Retirement can significantly affect sense of identity, and feelings of being needed and having a purpose. The loss of social connection and camaraderie, and the disconnection from routine and structure can present new challenges, and mental and physical health issues may also complicate adjustment. Often family relationships need time to settle into their 'new normal'.

If you are recently retired and experiencing conflicting emotions, this is completely natural and understandable. Some retired people have found connecting with existing or new social groups helpful or signing up to be a volunteer with an organisation that aligns with their values. Others now have the free time to coach sport or join a walking group to stay active. Creating a new and fulfilling life as a retired person takes time, but is possible! Be kind to yourself, talk to others who understand, and don't be afraid to reach out for help if you need. Call us for a referral to a local service that can help, or take a mental health check with the National Emergency Services Worker Support Service on the Black Dog Institute website.

Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful day out with our police legatees, gathering for lunch and a movie together.

It was fantastic to see such a large group of smiling faces enjoying the opportunity to catch up and share each other's company. Days like these are a great reminder of the importance of community and friendship. After losing a loved one, it can sometimes be difficult to attend social activities or get out and about on your own. That's why having a welcoming and supportive group of people to share these experiences with can make such a difference, helping to foster friendships, build confidence, and remind our police legatees that they are never alone.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so special. We look forward to seeing you again soon! ๐Ÿ’™
