Celebrating 100 Years of an Extraordinary Life š
This Friday, 18 September, Sister Deirdre Jordan RSM AC MBE would have celebrated her 100th birthday. Although we farewelled Sister Deirdre in January at the age of 99, her centenary is an occasion to celebrate an extraordinary life and a legacy that continues throughout South Australia and here at Carrington Cottages.
An educator, academic, Chancellor, advocate, trailblazer and Sister of Mercy, Sister Deirdre possessed a brilliant mind, a formidable ability to make things happen and, above all, a heart for people experiencing disadvantage. Even in her later years, she continued to generously share the business insight, wisdom and considered counsel that had distinguished her throughout her life. Her remarkable life encompassed leadership of St Aloysius College, an academic career at the University of Adelaide and a longstanding association with Flinders University, including 14 years as Chancellor.
For Carrington Cottages, Sister Deirdreās legacy is deeply personal.
Together with Sister Judith Redden RSM AO, our current Deputy Chair, Sister Deirdre championed Carrington Cottages and believed deeply in what we could achieve for people experiencing homelessness. Without their advocacy, connections and support, Jordan Place would not have been achieved. Our generous benefactors have always chosen to remain quietly anonymous. Carrington Cottages therefore elected to name Jordan Place in Sister Deirdreās honour ā acknowledging her instrumental role and paying homage to the Sisters of Mercy and their enduring values of compassion, dignity, service and social justice.
Today, Jordan Place stands as a tangible reminder of Sister Deirdreās ability to bring people and purpose together, and of what can be achieved when government, philanthropy and community unite around a shared commitment to improving the lives of others. As we celebrate her centenary, we acknowledge Sister Judith Redden, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Deirdreās family and friends, St Aloysius College, the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the many people fortunate enough to have shared in her remarkable life.
A brilliant mind. A pioneering spirit. A formidable leader. A compassionate heart.
Happy 100th Birthday, Sister Deirdre.
Your legacy lives on, and Carrington Cottages will forever be proud that a very special part of it carries your name. š
With love and gratitude,
The Board, Staff, Tenants and Future Tenants
