Recent reports suggest the harmful algal bloom affecting South Australian waters may continue moving towards Whyalla. While the impacts remain uncertain, ongoing monitoring will be critical in understanding how local marine ecosystems respond.

What are your thoughts?

Welcome to Whyalla, home to one of the world’s most extraordinary marine phenomena.

Between May and August each year, thousands of giant Australian cuttlefish gather along the coastline to breed, transforming the ocean into a moving display of colour, camouflage, and behaviour found nowhere else on this scale.

These intelligent creatures can instantly change their colours, patterns, and textures to communicate, attract mates, and defend territory beneath the surface.

These footage were captured during the 2022 giant cuttlefish aggregation season in South Australia.

Almost a year since diving beneath Rapid Bay Jetty was officially closed after severe winter storms caused further structural damage to the old jetty in June 2025.

A little throwback to one of South Australia’s most unforgettable underwater worlds.

South Australia’s coastline has been through a lot these past few months… but slowly, life is finding its way back underwater.
Small signs of recovery, clearer water, and marine life returning where it once disappeared. Still a long road ahead, but the ocean is trying. 🌊

The ocean is still healing, but for the first time in months, there are signs of hope beneath the surface of South Australia’s coastline.

Marine life is slowly returning, visibility is improving in some areas, and the recovery has begun.
