OUR URGENT CALL
THE recent brutal murder of Hellen Kamutumbe in Kisasa area in Kalumbila district of North-Western Province on unfounded allegations that she was behind the disappearance of private parts raises serious societal moral concerns.

As Swala Pilu (Hold your Heart) the local Non-Novernmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to su***de Prevention and Mental advocacy in the country, we demand the Zambia Police Service to urgently investigate the brutal murder of Hellen Kamutumbe.

As Swala Pilu, we strongly state that the act of mob justice is not only unlawful but also a gross violation of human rights and human dignity.

We condemn in strongest terms the barbaric and inhumane killing of an innocent woman.

Helen Kamutumbe aged 46 was not only a lady but a mother, a member of the community and a human being who deserved protection from the public and not violence.

Our deep concern and worry are that Hellen’s allegations had no proven record for her to face such a brutal death at the hands of a mob.

It is extremely worrying that Helen was stoned, stripped and humiliated in public as though she was a criminal.

These continued acts of mob justice in the country are not only unlawful but also a gross violation of human rights and human dignity.

We urgently call on the Zambia Police Service to urgently investigate this matter and ensure that all individuals involved, regardless of age or status are arrested and brought to justice.

Accountability is essential to deter such senseless acts in the future.

Our country Zambia is widely recognized as a Christian nation founded on values of love, compassion, and respect for human life.

It is therefore deeply troubling that members of the community including elders failed to intervene or offer protection to Hellen.

It was inhuman for citizens to watch helplessly Hellen Kamutumbe being killed in daylight.

Instead, some reportedly stood by, watched and even mocked the victim (Hellen Kamutumbe) during her suffering.

This action reflects a serious breakdown in community responsibility and moral values.

As Swala Pilu we urge all citizens to reject mob justice and to uphold the rule of law.

In a society that respects moral values, no individual has the right to take another person’s life based on a rumor or suspicion.

It is against this background that intensive public awareness campaigns on dangers of acting on misinformation and mob violence must be enforced.

Community leaders, traditional authorities, and civil society organizations must intensify awareness campaigns on human rights, conflict resolution, and the dangers of misinformation.

We stand with all key stakeholders to ensure that justice is prevailed on Hellen Kamutumbe’s matter.
