The future of healthcare in Zambia depends on strong primary health care systems.

At Amref Zambia, we believe sustainable impact begins at community level where prevention, early diagnosis and health education make the greatest difference.

By investing in frontline health workers, strengthening service delivery systems, and supporting local leadership, we are helping build resilient health systems that serve communities today and adapt for tomorrow.

Primary health care is not just the first point of contact, it is the foundation of Universal Health Coverage.

Community Health Workers: Delivering Essential Healthcare to the Last Mile

Meet Gostavia, a trained health worker serving in rural Zambia. Every day, he travels long distances to provide essential health services to his community. From disease prevention education and early diagnosis to maternal and child health support.

Before receiving training and mentorship through Amref Health Africa Zambia, he faced challenges common in underserved communities: limited resources, evolving health demands, long distances to health centers and the need for updated technical skills.
Through our health workforce strengthening programs, has gained:
✔ Enhanced diagnostic skills
✔ Improved patient communication and community engagement techniques
✔ Ongoing mentorship and supportive supervision
✔ Tools and knowledge to deliver quality care

Today, he is reaching more families than ever before, ensuring timely treatment, promoting preventive care, and building trust within his community.

Workforce development is not just about skills. It is about building resilient health systems capable of responding to local needs.
At Amref Zambia, we believe that investing in frontline health workers is one of the most powerful ways to improve health outcomes and expand equitable access to care.
Because when health workers are empowered, communities thrive.

Inclusive Healthcare is not Optional but a Right

For many persons with hearing impairments, accessing healthcare can be challenging. Not because services do not exist, but because communication barriers prevent them from receiving the care they deserve.

At Amref Health Africa Zambia, we are working to break those barriers by supporting sign language training for healthcare providers, ensuring that communication does not stand between patients and quality care.

Through the AHC programme, we are:

✔ Equipping healthcare workers with basic sign language skills
✔ Promoting respectful, patient-centered communication
✔ Strengthening inclusive service delivery within community health programs
✔ Advancing equitable access for persons with disabilities

Healthcare should be safe, dignified, and accessible for everyone regardless of ability. By integrating disability inclusion into our health systems strengthening efforts, we move closer to a Zambia where no one is left behind.

Because true universal health coverage (UHC) means reaching all people.

Day 2 at the ITS Kopala Summit was all about innovation in action, as our dynamic young innovators pitched bold, homegrown solutions to key stakeholders including the Hon. Minister of Science and Technology - Felix Mutati.
From strengthening health systems to improving access and streamlining supply chains, these ideas reflect the power of local innovation in addressing real community challenges.
At Amref, we remain committed to advancing universal health coverage by investing in and supporting Zambian youth who are designing solutions for Zambian communities, because lasting change starts from within.

Amref at Information and Technology Summit (ITS) Kopala 100

We’re at the ITS Kopala Summit 2026, being held under the theme:
“Bridging Innovation and Investment for Scalable Impact.”

Speaking on a panel on why platforms like this matter, our Country Manager, Viviane Sakanga, grounded the conversation in one powerful truth.

Real impact doesn’t start in boardrooms, it starts in communities.
From households to health systems, her message was clear,
innovation must respond to the real challenges communities face and those communities must be part of shaping the solutions.

Because it’s not just about new ideas. It’s about solutions that last. Solutions that scale. Solutions that matter.

At Amref, this is exactly what we are driving through our work and through our Africa Health Collaborative (AHC) programme, in partnership with the Foundation. We are supporting a new generation of innovators and health leaders to build sustainable, community-driven solutions.

This is how we move from ideas to impact.
This is how we build resilient systems.
