In many resource-limited neonatal intensive care units, manually check vital signs at set intervals. This process can delay detection of life-threatening conditions such as apnoea of or respiratory distress, where timely intervention is critical.

To address this challenge, CIDRZ’s Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Department has launched a low-cost breathing monitoring study for preterm infants at the Women and Newborn Hospital, University Teaching Hospital.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Accelerometer Study, also known as the DREAM (Detection of Respiratory Events through Acoustics and Motion), tests a small, low-cost, wireless chest-worn device that connects to a smartphone and continuously tracks newborn breathing patterns.

The sensor detects subtle chest movements and uses audio signals to identify breathing irregularities. Read More:https://bit.ly/42AyezW

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading infectious disease globally, and Zambia continues to face a high burden. In response, the U.S. Government-supported Tuberculosis Local Organisations Network (TBLON) Project is supporting the Ministry of Health Zambia to advance research-informed approaches to strengthen detection, prevention, and care nationwide.

CIDRZ is proud to introduce the Folic Acid Salt Study (FISFA Zambia), an innovative initiative aimed at increasing levels among women of reproductive age in .

Folic acid plays a critical role in preventing fetal neural tube defects, a life-threatening birth defect that occurs within the first month of pregnancy, often before many women know they are .

In Zambia, folic acid supplementation is typically initiated at the first antenatal care visit, which often occurs after the first , missing this crucial early window of prevention.

The study will assess the effectiveness of FISFA as a universal food fortification vehicle by increasing serum and red blood cell (RBC) folate levels, evaluating folate insufficiency, and highlighting the need for foods in Zambia.

A total of 250 participants will be enrolled and followed over six months, generating evidence to inform future nutrition policies and interventions.
