Statement by Women for Change on Non-Bailable Sexual Offences

Women for Change welcomes the amended Criminal Procedure Code Act No. 4 of 2026, which makes all sexual offences including r**e, defilement, and in**st non-bailable.

This is a significant step toward protecting survivors, strengthening accountability, and ending impunity for sexual violence. Too often, perpetrators exploit bail to intimidate survivors and evade justice. This amendment sends a clear message: sexual violence will not be tolerated.

We commend Government for prioritizing the safety and dignity of women and children. We urge continued investment in survivor-centered services, timely prosecution, and public awareness to ensure this law translates into real protection and justice.

Women for Change remains committed to working with stakeholders to safeguard the rights of women and girls across Zambia.

Meet Maria Mwale, a determined farmer from Nswana Village, Rufunsa District!

As a widow raising four dependents, Maria's life was tough. But with support from Women for Change's (WfC) Women Empowerment Project(WEP), funded by SIDA, she's thriving!

With a K2800 interest-free loan, Maria started a poultry business, applying improved feeding and disease control techniques learned from WFC trainings. Her hard work paid off – she grew her flock from 26 to 200 chickens!

This success has enabled her to support her children's education, with one now at university and another in grade 12. The mentorship and financial support from WFC have given Maria confidence, practical skills, and a brighter future

"I'm grateful to WFC for the empowerment that has brought hope, dignity, and a better life for my family," says Maria .

Sonta epo wabomba β€” a picture is worth a thousand words

In Mumbwa's Shimbiji Area, a powerful change is unfolding through the Women Economic Empowerment Project, supported by SIDA and We Effect. Women for Change is strengthening women's leadership and tackling GBV by challenging norms that limit women's participation in agriculture and decision-making.

Meet Ms. Jennipher Shilumwemwe, who gained confidence and leadership skills through the project's training. She joined a Village Savings and Lending Group, accessed financial resources, and invested in livestock. With her savings, she bought two cattle, boosting her farming productivity, income, and food security.

" Sonta epo wabomba," she said, gesturing to her cattle – living proof of transformation!

Drought shouldn't mean dignity lost!

Women for Change is on the ground, supporting women and girls in drought-affected communities in Zambia's Western and Southern Provinces!

As part of our Integrated Emergency Humanitarian Response project, supported by Global Affairs Canada and partners, we're promoting Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) to keep women and girls safe and dignified in Sinazongwe, Gwembe, Namwala, Kaoma, Mongu, and Kalabo Districts.

We're distributing 2,000 MHM Dignity Kits and running awareness sessions. Because every woman and girl deserves to manage her period with dignity, no matter the circumstances.

Drought may be out of their control, but with MHM, they can face it with confidence.

Thanks to Global Affairs Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Zambia, and Keeper Zambia Foundation for their support!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Women for Change Commemorates International Women's Day:

Demanding Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls

As we mark International Women's Day, Women for Change(WfC) joins the global community in celebrating the achievements of women and girls while sounding the alarm on the urgent need for rights, justice, and action.

Under the theme "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," we acknowledge the progress made towards gender equality, but emphasize that much work remains. In Zambia, women and girls continue to face barriers to education, economic empowerment, and freedom from violence.

We demand that duty-bearers take concrete action to:
- Ensure equal access to quality education and healthcare
- Promote women's economic empowerment and entrepreneurship
- End gender-based violence and ensure justice for survivors
- Increase women's representation in decision-making positions

As Zambia heads towards the August 13 General and Presidential elections, Women for Change calls on all political parties to prioritize gender equality by adopting more women candidates at local government and parliamentary level. Let's translate commitment to women's empowerment into tangible action.

Let's turn commitments into tangible change. Together, we can create a Zambia where all women and girls thrive.
