A Nation's Gratitude in a Time of Sorrow

To Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele, Commander of the Zambia Army,
And to the Bereaved Family of Staff Sergeant Banda Alick,

It is with profound sorrow that we, at the Jubilee Leaders Network, learned of the passing of Staff Sergeant Banda Alick. While we may not have had the honour of knowing him in life, we feel deeply the weight of his sacrifice. His return to the soil of Zambia is a sombre moment for our entire nation.

The image of his remains being received under the solemn night sky at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, paints a poignant picture of a nation honoring a silent hero. To die in the line of duty, far from home, while wearing the blue helmet of the United Nations in the Central African Republic, is the ultimate testament to a life of courage and selflessness. Staff Sergeant Banda did not merely serve the Zambia Army; he served humanity, carrying the banner of peace for Zambia and for all of Africa.

We echo the sentiments of the Defence Permanent Secretary, Mr. Maambo Haamaundu, that this loss is felt in every corner of our land. From his first day of training at Lukanga Recruit Training Centre in 2012 to his final posting with the Corps of Armour, his career was a journey of dedication. His sacrifice, as rightly noted, starkly highlights the risks our brave men and women voluntarily face to uphold global peace and security. It is a powerful reminder of the price paid for the stability we often take for granted.

To the family, please accept our most heartfelt condolences. No words can soften the sharp edge of your grief, but we pray you find solace in the knowledge that your husband, father, son, and brother was a man of immense honour. His legacy is etched not only in the annals of the Zambia Army but in the pursuit of a more peaceful world.

To Lieutenant General Zyeele and the entire Zambia Army, we stand with you in mourning. The loss of a soldier is indeed devastating, and we are moved by your leadership and solidarity with the grieving family. As Colonel Mbao Brian Ntanga urged the contingent in Bangui, may we all honour SSgt Banda's memory by renewing our own commitment to the causes of peace, unity, and service.

May the Almighty God surround the Banda family with His comforting presence and grant you strength through this period of mourning. May the soul of Staff Sergeant Banda Alick, a true peacekeeper, rest in eternal peace.

Thank you for your Service.

With deepest sympathy and national pride.

Today we are reminded of a simple but powerful truth: the weight of regret is far heavier than the cost of trying and failing.

What inspires us most is that this team has chosen to try. chosen courage over hesitation, effort over comfort, and growth over fear. Every step forward, no matter how uncertain, is a declaration that we believe in the possibility of progress.

Here’s to the spirit of rising, learning, and striving with determination. Here’s to choosing effort over regret.

Participation in the 1000 Summit Panel Discussion

We were honoured to have our Executive Director participate as a panelist in a thought-provoking discussion under the theme “Who Are We?” — a conversation that sought to explore identity, purpose, and the role of individuals in shaping the future of our societies.

In his remarks, he emphasized that “the youth should be talked to, not talked about.” He highlighted the importance of including young people in key national and community conversations — not as an afterthought, but as essential contributors from the very beginning.

He further called for a reimagining of leadership — one that transcends politics and embraces every sphere of life, where each person rises to serve with integrity, vision, and a spirit of unity.

Together, we are reminded that the strength of a nation lies not only in its leaders, but in the collective will of its people — especially its youth — to build a just, vibrant, and prosperous society.

A Message from the Executive Director, Jubilee Leaders Network
On the Occasion of the 61st Anniversary of Zambia's Independence

Fellow Zambians, Sons and Daughters of the Soil,

Today, as the sun rises on 24th October 2025, we stand together in the warm light of 61 years of self-rule. Our hearts swell with pride, our voices unite in song, and our flag flies as a vibrant symbol of our sovereignty and our shared identity. On this momentous day, we honour the legacy of our forebears whose courage and vision carved a nation of hope from the stone of colonialism.

This year, we celebrate under a powerful and purposeful theme: "Building a Resilient and Prosperous Zambia." This is not just a call to action; it is the very blueprint for our next chapter. Our independence was the foundation laid in 1964. Today, our sacred duty is to build upon it, a nation that can withstand any storm and one where prosperity is not a dream for a few, but a tangible reality for all.

But how do we build this resilient and prosperous Zambia? The answer lies not in brick and mortar but in the spirit of our people.

Resilience is built when we, as one people, choose unity over division and dialogue over discord. It is forged in our ability to spread love and understanding in our communities, to support our neighbours in times of need, and to uphold the peace that has always been our nation's most cherished jewel. A united Zambia is an unshakable Zambia.

Prosperity is achieved when we channel our collective energies towards innovation, hard work, and integrity. It blossoms in an environment where every young person is empowered to lead, every entrepreneur is supported to innovate, and every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to our national wealth. It is a prosperity measured not only in economic growth but in the health, education, and well-being of every Zambian.

To fellow young leaders of our nation, you are the chief architects of this resilient and prosperous future. The Jubilee Leaders Network calls upon you to embrace this role with passion and purpose. Your energy, your digital fluency, and your unwavering hope are the most critical resources we have. Lead with character in your schools, workplaces, and communities. Be the catalysts for the change we wish to see.

As your Executive Director, I call upon every citizen, from the halls of government to the humblest home in our villages nationwide, let us come together. Let us celebrate our diversity as our strength. Let us spread love where there is hate, and extend a hand where there is need. Let us help create the peaceful and united Zambia our founders dreamed of.

Let this 61st Independence Day be more than a celebration, let it be our collective recommitment to the sacred task of nation-building. Let us move forward, shoulder to shoulder, with a resilient spirit and a steadfast focus on a prosperous future for our children.

May the Almighty continue to bless and keep our beautiful nation.

Happy 61st Independence Day!
One Zambia, One Nation.

Sincerely,

Kennedy Chileshe

JUBILEE LEADERS NETWORK OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF H.E. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

June 5, 2025

The Jubilee Leaders Network stands in profound sorrow following the tragic news of the passing of Zambia’s Sixth President, His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died today in South Africa. Our hearts are heavy, and our spirits united in grief as we extend our deepest condolences to his family, the people of Zambia, and all who revered his legacy.

During this trying time, we call for dignity, compassion, and national solidarity.

The Jubilee Leaders Network implores all Zambians to:
- Reject division and embrace shared mourning, setting aside political discord.
- Celebrate his public service beyond partisan lines, acknowledging his role in Zambia’s democratic journey.
- Support the Lungu family with prayers and grace as they navigate this irreplaceable loss.

Our Prayer for Zambia
In this hour of darkness, we pray for:
- Divine comfort for President Lungu’s loved ones, especially his family who stood vigil in Pretoria far from home.
- Strength for Zambia—a nation he served—to rise above and honor his memory.
- Wisdom for leaders across the political spectrum to prioritize compassion over contention, reflecting Lungu’s life.

President Lungu’s journey has ended, but his imprint on Zambia remains. Let us lay to rest not only a leader, but the discord that too often distracts from our common humanity. As flags lower and prayers ascend, may Zambia stand as one—united in grief, strengthened by legacy, and committed to the unity he championed.

In solemn solidarity,
JUBILEE LEADERS NETWORK
A Coalition for Dignified Leadership and National Unity

Statement from the Executive Director of Jubilee Leaders Network on Kenneth Kaunda Day

Today, as we commemorate Kenneth Kaunda Day, we honor the life and legacy of a true Pan-Africanist, a selfless leader, and the founding father of our beloved Zambia. Dr. Kaunda was more than just a politician; he was a symbol of unity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice and freedom. His dedication to the liberation of not only Zambia but the entire Southern African region remains an inspiration to generations of leaders and citizens alike.

At Jubilee Leaders Network, we draw profound lessons from KK’s leadership—his humility, his passion for education, and his belief in the power of love and reconciliation. In a time when the world feels increasingly divided, his message of "One Zambia, One Nation" reminds us of the strength found in unity and the importance of putting people above personal gain. Let us honor his memory by embodying these values in our daily lives, striving for a society built on compassion, integrity, and service to others.

As we reflect on his contributions, let us also recommit ourselves to the ideals he stood for: peace, equality, and the upliftment of every Zambian. May his legacy continue to guide us as we work toward a brighter, more inclusive future. Rest in power, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. Your light still shines in the heart of our nation.

A New Dawn for Zambia: Progressive Constitutional Reforms Set to Enhance Governance and Inclusion

By Kennedy Chileshe, Executive Director of Jubilee Leaders Network

Introduction
Zambia stands at the precipice of transformative constitutional reform, with proposed amendments that prioritize inclusivity, accountability, and pragmatic governance. As Executive Director of the Jubilee Leaders Network—a youth-focused organization championing leadership and democratic participation—I commend these forward-thinking proposals. Notably absent are divisive changes to presidential term limits, the 50%+1 electoral threshold, or running mate requirements. Instead, the reforms focus on addressing systemic gaps, fostering equitable development, and empowering marginalized voices. Below, I unpack the 13 proposals poised to redefine Zambia’s governance landscape.

#1. Constituency Delimitation: Fairness in Resource Allocation
Amend Articles 58 & 68
Redrawing constituency boundaries based on population and geographic size will ensure equitable distribution of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). This critical shift addresses historical imbalances, ensuring rural and underserved communities receive their fair share of resources.

#2. Streamlined Elections: Ending Costly Delays
Amend Article 52(6)
If a candidate withdraws, elections will proceed without restarting nominations—a pragmatic fix to save time, reduce costs, and uphold electoral integrity.

#3. Inclusive Representation: Seats for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities
Amend Articles 47(2) & 68
Guaranteeing parliamentary seats for marginalized groups aligns with global best practices and Zambia’s commitment to inclusivity. For youth, this is a monumental step toward meaningful political participation.

#4. MPs in Local Councils: Bridging National and Grassroots Governance
Amend Article 153(2)
Reintegrating MPs into local councils fosters collaboration between national and local leaders, ensuring development projects align with community needs.

#5. Election Petition Clarity: Justice Without Delay
Amend Articles 73(2), 101(5), & 103(2)
Mandating resolution of election petitions within 90 days reduces political instability and strengthens public confidence in electoral outcomes.

#6. By-Election Reform: Saving Millions, Prioritizing Development
Amend Article 57
Eliminating by-elections for party vacancies will save Zambia K264 million annually, freeing funds for critical sectors like education and healthcare.

#7. Expanding Nominated MPs: Enriching Legislative Debates
Amend Article 68(2)(b)
Increasing nominated MPs beyond eight allows Parliament to co-opt experts, technocrats, and diverse voices—a win for evidence-based policymaking.

#8. Harmonized Parliamentary Terms: Stability for Progress
Amend Articles 81 & 266
Fixing parliamentary terms at five full years synchronizes elections, ensuring stability and long-term policy implementation.

#9. Curbing Pre-Election Abuse: Ministers to Step Down
Amend Article 116
Requiring ministers to vacate office 90 days before elections prevents misuse of state resources for campaigns, promoting fairness.

#10. Mayor Term Limits Removed: Experience Meets Continuity
Amend Article 154(2)(b)
Scrapping the two-term cap for mayors retains skilled leadership, ensuring sustained progress on local development agendas.

#11. Lowering Barriers for Cabinet Secretary: Youth-Friendly Reforms
Amend Article 176(3)
Reducing eligibility experience from 10 to 5 years opens doors for young professionals, aligning with our network’s vision for intergenerational leadership.

#12. Seamless Legal Transitions: Stability in Justice
Amend Articles 178(1)(b) & 179(4)(b)
Ensuring the Attorney-General and DPP remain in office until successors are appointed avoids disruption in legal processes during transitions.

#13. Defining “Child” and “Adult”: Aligning with Global Standards
Amend Article 266
Clarifying a “child” as under 18 and “adult” as 18+ strengthens child protection frameworks, a priority for Zambia’s future.

Conclusion
These amendments represent a bold leap toward a Zambia that values equity, efficiency, and the voices of all its citizens. For the Jubilee Leaders Network, reforms like youth representation and lowered eligibility barriers resonate deeply with our mission to empower young leaders. As Parliament deliberates, we urge lawmakers to prioritize these non-partisan, nation-building changes. Let us seize this moment to craft a constitution that reflects the aspirations of a united, progressive Zambia.
