For many of these children, stepping into a wildlife reserve for the first time is a transformational milestone.

Over three days, theoretical lessons turn into direct experience, tracking animal spoor on foot, learning the mechanics of camera traps, studying wildlife anatomy, and exploring nocturnal ecosystems under UV light.
When young people experience nature firsthand, conservation ceases to be an abstract concept in a textbook and becomes a personal responsibility.

By grounding education in immersive, real-world moments, we equip the next generation with the knowledge, curiosity, and pride needed to protect our shared natural heritage.

Across much of the African continent, giraffes are facing what conservationists call a “silent extinction”, their overall numbers have dropped by roughly 30% to 40% over the last three decades due to severe habitat fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Species like the Northern giraffe and Masai giraffe have seen staggering regional declines, leaving some subspecies critically endangered.

In South Africa, however, the story is remarkably different.
Driven by effective private game reserve management, state-protected areas, and proactive land stewardship, South Africa’s Southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa) population is thriving and actively expanding. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, South Africa stands out as a global conservation beacon, proving that when ecosystems are managed well and communities are engaged, iconic species can flourish.

Protecting rhinos requires critical thinking, tough questions, and a 360-degree view of conservation.
During a recent educational camp at Pongola Game Reserve, our young conservationists tackled one of wildlife management’s most complex debates: legalizing the rhino horn trade. Role-playing as policymakers, community leaders, and field experts, teams explored both the pro-legislation side and the pro-prohibition side.
The goal wasn’t to reach a verdict, but to push learners beyond easy answers. By analyzing the economic, ethical, and ecological stakes, these future leaders developed essential critical thinking skills.

At the Fisher Foundation, we bring children living in rural communities along our wildlife park borders into immersive 3-day conservation camps. By inspiring the next generation of custodians, we’re building a lasting shield for Africa’s wildlife.
