Khula Development Group is a non-profit organisation, with a mission to prevent school dropout amongst primary school learners from disadvantaged communities. We believe that every child deserves a chance to realize their potential, and our focus is on the foundation phase, from Grade R to Grade 4, where the educational journey begins. Khula provides school- and home-based support for students sho

wing early warning signs of disengagement from school. We strive to reinforce the value of education and school attendance within households and believe that by targeting the root causes of disengagement at an early stage, we can help these children chart a brighter future. Khula envisions a transformed generation where every child, upon completing their school career, can contribute to the social and economic fabric of South Africa. Investing in the education and development of these young minds, we are not only changing individual lives but also securing a brighter future for our country.

What happens in a Khula class? We have fun, we learn and we make sure every learner feels like a superstar! โญ๏ธ

At each partner school, we have a dedicated Khula classroom for learners to get the help they deserve. By combining ๐จ๐œ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ with ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, we are catching those who are falling through the cracks of a broken system with intentional early intervention.

Maybe we cannot change the system on our own, but we will make sure that every child who crosses our path knows that they are worthy of a wonderful future.

Khula board member Dr Marelize Vergottini describes the crisis in a new interview on the collapse of child welfare services in South Africa and why teachers are leaving the profession because of it.

โ€œWe are losing teachers, the social workers who support them and the non-governmental organisations to which they refer vulnerable children. These are not three separate crises. They are one crisis, and it is unfolding now,โ€

Eighty-one per cent of South Africaโ€™s Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning, while six in every 10 children experience trauma during childhood.

Her call is for the referral network, schools, social workers and NGOs to be funded as essential infrastructure, not treated as charity.
