When organisations work together, communities can truly change for the better.💪 Our friendship with Inceba Trust is a wonderful example of this.

Today, Khula trained six teachers from Ritchie, just outside Kimberley, as part of a two-day workshop Inceba is hosting for their teachers.

🎓 We covered Learning Differences and Practical Accommodations, as well as Behaviour, Boundaries and Consequences.

The need is great, and support is limited. Thank you, Inceba, for hosting us! 💚💛💙

𝐀 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦!🌍

After presenting on the topic of transformative group work in school social work at the IASWG - International Association for Social Work with Groups in Puerto Rico earlier this year, Daleen and our partners at NWU - North-West University in South Africa and Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom will present again today, this time at the online conference. This is such an amazing opportunity to speak about the importance of having social workers in schools. 💛

Beth will also be training the amazing team from Bright Hills Academy in Gatare Village in Rwanda. They will learn about neurodevelopmental disorders and how to identify challenges and support children in a resource-limited context. 🧠

We feel extremely privileged to share our knowledge with the world.

Reports can be submitted by professionals and members of the public, either with your details or anonymously. Reports are securely routed to the correct office and officials for review.

On average, 8% of children are affected and nearly 1 in 3 children are affected in parts of the Western Cape. 📈

🤱When a mother drinks during pregnancy, the alcohol goes straight into her baby's bloodstream. A baby's body can't break it down the way an adult's can, so it stays there, doing damage while the brain and body are still forming.

What can FASD look like?

💪Physical
▪️Distinctive facial features in some cases
▪️Growth deficits, below-average height, weight, or head circumference
▪️Organ damage, including heart, kidney, or bone defects
▪️Vision or hearing problems

🧠Neurocognitive
▪️Learning disabilities and difficulty with abstract reasoning (maths, time, money)
▪️Speech and language delays
▪️Poor memory
▪️Attention and concentration deficits
▪️Lower IQ in more severe cases

👥Behavioural and social
▪️Hyperactivity and poor impulse control
▪️Difficulty regulating emotions
▪️Trouble understanding consequences or reading social cues
▪️Poor judgement and vulnerability to being led by others
▪️Sleep difficulties, especially in younger children

Every child affected by FASD is living with a disability we already know how to prevent. 𝐁𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.

What happens in a Khula class? We have fun, we learn and we make sure every learner feels like a superstar! ⭐️

At each partner school, we have a dedicated Khula classroom for learners to get the help they deserve. By combining 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 with 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, we are catching those who are falling through the cracks of a broken system with intentional early intervention.

Maybe we cannot change the system on our own, but we will make sure that every child who crosses our path knows that they are worthy of a wonderful future.
