Triumph of the Human Spirit

In 1956, at just four years old, Arthur Craik contracted polio.

It left him with lifelong physical challenges but it never took away his determination to live life to the fullest.

Arthur went on to become an architect, dedicating 45 years to the City of Cape Town and helping shape the city and improve the lives of its citizens. He retired as Head of Architecture.

His story is one of courage, faith and perseverance. His message is powerful: “We are not victims. We are survivors.”

As we mark World Polio Day on 24 October, we also celebrate Rotary International’s leading role in the global fight to eradicate polio.

Since launching its first major polio immunisation project in the Philippines in 1979, Rotary has helped drive the global eradication effort.

In 1988, Rotary became a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Since then, Rotary members worldwide have contributed more than US$2.9 billion, mobilised volunteers, supported vaccination campaigns and advocated for the resources needed to protect every child.

These efforts have helped reduce wild polio cases by more than 99%. Yet the mission is not complete. As long as polio exists anywhere, children everywhere remain at risk.

The Rotary Club of Tygerberg proudly stands alongside Rotary members around the world in the fight for a polio-free future.

Through awareness, advocacy and vaccination, we can make polio history. Every child deserves that chance.
