It's that wonderful time of year in Rotary when clubs elect their leaders for the year ahead!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that the Rotary Club of Tygerberg will be re-electing our President, W***y Watson, for a third year of outstanding service, to be celebrated at a special breakfast on 18th July at the Durbanville Bowling Club.

W***y's leadership has been nothing short of inspiring.

Among his many achievements, he has championed the initiative to provide learning tablets to schools in our community in need, driving it forward with dedication and heart, making a lasting difference in the lives of young learners across our Durbanville community.

Three years and one incredible leader. We are proud and privileged to have him at the helm once more.

We had the joy of welcoming three wonderful new members into our Rotary family on Monday 25th May 2026: Marli Lotriet, Tim Snyders and Jaimee Snyders. We cannot wait to see the energy and passion you bring to our club!

We are also blessed to extend a very special welcome to Peter Vurgarelis, a seasoned Rotarian with many years of dedicated service and a deep involvement in Rotary. Peter, we are truly honoured to have you join the Rotary Club of Tygerberg. Your experience, commitment and your passion for Rotary are a tremendous addition to our club family.

What a very special evening for Rotary club of Tygerberg.

Tonight we had the absolute privilege of welcoming our students, Lungelwa, Tonia and Zukile all matric learners from Fisantekraal High School who came to share their experiences and achievements with our club at our monthly speaker evening.

Hearing their stories reminded us exactly why programmes such as RYLA and school chess initiatives are so important not only to individuals but to the school and the community as a whole.

Our RYLA students spoke beautifully about the camp they all attended in Franschhoek in April — sharing their stories of teamwork, conquering obstacle courses, building confidence, and forming lasting friendships and connections. Their courage, growth and enthusiasm are truly inspiring.

We also celebrated the remarkable success of the Fisantekraal High School Chess team, who achieved an outstanding 2nd and 10th place in the Western Province overall at a recent tournament held in George. An incredible achievement of which they should be immensely proud.

None of this would be possible without the encouragement and support of Rotary, together with the unwavering dedication of their coach and mentor, Mr Page, an Economics teacher and a passionate chess coach, and the wonderful support of Mrs Page, who helps guide and encourage the students to remain focused on their studies and future goals alongside their extracurricular achievements.

A very special mention must also go to our Rotary Club member, Margaret Lambert, whose unwavering dedication and commitment to Fisantekraal High School, RYLA, Interact and the chess team continue to make a truly meaningful difference in the lives of these students. Her support for and her encouragement of these young people help shape confident future leaders and create opportunities that will have a lasting impact.

What stood out most tonight was hearing how these young people, despite daily challenges really embrace opportunities placed before them and they are creating a ripple effect of inspiration at their school.

Younger girls are already following in their footsteps, proving just how powerful leadership, encouragement and opportunity can be.

A truly motivational and uplifting evening for Rotary Tygerberg.
