Durbanville Children's Home Celebrating 143 years of being a safe haven to 144 less privileged children within the Cape Peninsula

We can all make a difference in the lives of traumatised children. Many children are neglected and in great danger due to poverty, crime, violence, drug abuse and the general disintegration of moral values and family life in many South African communities. Durbanville Children’s Home provides a safe haven for these children in order to protect them from physical and emotional abuse. In terms of th

e Children's Act, courts place children found in need of care and safety with homes such as Durbanville Children’s Home which is registered to accommodate 144 children, from newborns to children of the age of 18. Durbanville Children’s Home has been taking care of children in need for the past 142 years, since it opened its doors in 1883. It focuses on the care, development and rehabilitation of emotionally traumatised children through a process of therapeutic intervention and re-uniting them with their families if possible. However, the home receives a subsidy of only 32% of their total expenditure from the government and is therefore dependent on local and foreign communities for funds and donations (NPO 011-891). Durbanville Children’s Home, a South African non-profit organisation, is a programme of BADISA, a church-based non-governmental welfare organisation. Therefore, BADISA provides professional assistance as well as a policy and guidelines for the home, ensuring that the home meets the ever-changing needs of children in need of care and safety. Durbanville Children’s Home is also registered with the Department of Social Development and is therefore subject to governmental policies and principles. There are currently 144 children between the ages of 2 and 18 from communities all around the Cape Peninsula in the home’s residential care. The home is recognised as a model for child and youth care in a therapeutic milieu. The home also acts as a place of safety for children removed from their families as an emergency measure. In order to make a difference in the lives of the children at Durbanville Children’s Home, view the services and programmes on offer at the home as well as the children who benefit from these. When people think of donating to a children’s home, money is often the first thing that comes to mind, and while financial contributions make a huge difference in helping us keep our doors open and our programmes running, they’re not the only way to make an impact.

Did you know that donations of household items, kitchenware, toiletries, clothing, bedding, and non-perishable food help us provide for our children every single day? That extra set of pots gathering dust in your cupboard, the clothing your children have outgrown, or the unopened toiletries sitting in your bathroom cabinet could become something incredibly valuable to a child in our care. These practical donations help us stretch our resources further and ensure that our children have access to the essentials they need to thrive.

So, if you’re busy decluttering, spring cleaning, or simply looking for a meaningful way to support a local welfare organisation, we’d love to hear from you.

📍 Drop off your donations at 1 Church Street, Durbanville.

Every item donated helps us turn a house into a home. ❤️

It takes a village, and what an incredible village we have. ❤️

These are just a few of the amazing individuals, families, schools, and businesses who have taken the time to visit us over the past few months, arriving with arms full of generosity and hearts full of kindness.

From Easter treats and sweet surprises to beautifully hand-knitted beanies and everyday essentials, each donation has helped make our house feel even more like a home.

While the gifts themselves are always appreciated, it’s the thought behind them that means the most. Every visit, every donation, and every act of kindness reminds our children that they are seen, valued, and supported by a community that truly cares.

To everyone who has walked through our doors, donated, volunteered, or thought of us when looking for a way to give back—thank you! Your generosity continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of our children.

We are constantly amazed by the compassion of our community, and we couldn’t do what we do without you. 💙

🚀 Meet Tylor! ⚽

Tylor is 11 years old and the newest member of our Durbanville Children’s Home family.

If there’s a ball to kick, a race to run, or an adventure to be had, you’ll probably find Tylor right in the middle of it! Full of energy and always on the move, he’s a sporty young boy with a huge imagination and even bigger dreams.
When he isn’t busy running around, Tylor is dreaming about blasting off into space, exploring the Milky Way, and one day setting foot on the moon. 🌙✨

Like every child, Tylor deserves the opportunity to dream big, discover his potential, and build a bright future.
Through our Sponsor a Child programme, you can help provide the care, stability, and support he needs to continue reaching for the stars.

⚽ Drop a soccer ball in the comments if you’d like to sponsor Tylor for just R100 per month and help make a difference in his journey.

Mission Complete 🛩️

After months of planning, prepping and stress, we having finally completed our biggest mission to date.

This year, we took on our biggest event yet, joining hands with the South African Airforce Base Ysterplaat. We dreamed big, we aimed for the stars and we channeled our passion and love for our kids into creating an event that would help us secure their futures.

To the SAAF Ysterplaat, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for opening your hanger doors to us. To Kos Kouture , AVZ Decor, AV Staging, RYO Coffee, and every single supplier and support, we could not have done this without you.

To our guests, you were phenomenal. And because of you, our children will be cared for, supported, and given the life that was stripped from them.

Success Lekabe, Carl Wastie and Neels Van Jaarsveld. You brought heart, passion, love and laughter and we could not be more grateful for your presence and your support ❤️

Think about how many children you have...

Think about the countless hours spent in the kitchen, helping with homework, giving bath time, making sure they get to school on time.

Now multiply those efforts by 144.

At Durbanville Children's Home, our number 1 priority will always be to give our kids everything they need. But this is not always easy. With 144 mouths to feed, 288 tiny hands and feet to care for, and countless hours and staff members needed to ensure a high standard of care for each child, the work at DCH never ends.

But at the end of the day, when the house units go quiet, when our grounds finally get a chance to rest, and our youth care workers can finally relax, every moment spent caring for our children becomes worth it.

“It’s in your hands now” - Nelson Mandela

This year, we launch our Mandela Day initiative with the hopes of uplifitng, protecting and supporting the children in our care, whilst still allowing the community the utmost opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

As our children will be on school holidays and present on our grounds, this year’s initiative has been carefully restructured in accordance with our child protection protocols, ensuring that every child’s safety, dignity, and wellbeing remain at the heart of all we do.

We’ve created meaningful ways for businesses, schools, families, and community members to get involved, give back, and help us continue creating a safe and nurturing environment for the 144 children who call DCH home.

Together, we can turn 67 minutes into lasting change. 🤝

A children’s home is often seen through a very simple lens: that if the basics are covered—food, clothing, schooling—then everything must be “fine.”
The reality is more layered than that.

Yes, our children are cared for and their basic needs are met. But care doesn’t end there. What we provide is ongoing, structured, and deeply relational: therapy, education support, enrichment, transport, medical care, and the consistent presence of trained caregivers who show up every single day.

And like any group of children, they are still learning. They test boundaries, struggle with emotions, and sometimes express themselves in ways that are hard to understand. That is not “bad behaviour”, it is communication, growth, and part of their healing journey.

This is why support matters so much. Not just for survival, but for stability. Not just for today, but for the long-term work of helping children feel safe, regulated, and able to thrive.

The reality is simple: meeting basic needs is not the finish line. It’s the beginning.
