VENEZUELA'S TWIN EARTHQUAKES: HOPE AMID HEARTBREAK
Venezuela is reeling after twin earthquakes struck the country in late June, leaving widespread destruction and a mounting humanitarian crisis. The latest official figures report at least 4,490 people dead and more than 16,700 injured, while thousands remain displaced after homes, schools and hospitals were reduced to rubble.
As rescue efforts continue, stories of extraordinary courage have emerged from the devastation. Among them is the account of a mother who remained trapped beneath the collapsed remains of her home with her three young children including an infant. With no food or clean water available, she continued breastfeeding them, sustaining their lives until rescuers reached the family. Her selfless determination has become a powerful symbol of hope amid overwhelming loss.
Survivors now face new challenges, including overcrowded shelters, limited access to clean water and growing concerns over disease outbreaks. Humanitarian organisations are working tirelessly to provide emergency aid, but the needs remain immense.
In times of tragedy, Christians are reminded that God is "our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). As Venezuela mourns, the Church is called to stand in prayer, compassion and practical support, reflecting Christ's love to those whose lives have been shattered.
