Another busy outside work day at the fort site. With the tremendous help of Carla Lykins & Marc Robinson, I was able to get tons done on the last of the three portals viewing boxes. Carla & I got the 4 x 4 squares I built yesterday, into the ground, semi-leveled, shimmed up & spiked together. After Carla departed Marc Robinson came to help for a few hours. During that time we, back-filled the trench around the portal box, giving it a good tamping down as we went. We also cut off the bent section of the old iron decorative fence out front. Linda Zuckerman came out and metal detected about half of the remaining dirt pile for us. While we had her checking out front at the North end of the fence, she discovered the buried bottom of an old Iron Fence Gatepost that we did not realize existed. A few small iron objects probably related to that post were located nearby by Linda. I spent a good deal of time trying to dig that post base out, but realized it was set in concrete, took photos, measurements and back-filled over it. Linda was a busy lady today as along with the boring stuff such as nail heads that she found, she located what I believe is a spike hinge type thing that would support a shutter or such. When I was not playing with the dirt I gave fort site tours to two couples and a single lady whose daughter had visited the site before and recommended us to mom. The folks were all so super nice and bravely endured my long winded explanations with tired smiles. The older couple was from Harrisburg, Pa. I believe they said. I had mentioned to them how much I enjoyed my visit to the state museum located there. The younger couple made a generous donation towards the portal project. I forgot to take photos of the third portal in the ground today.
