At today’s NAACP meeting, the family of William “Shep” Harris, Sr., accepted the
VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 204
Celebrating the life of William Shepard Harris, Sr. (Passed February 2026).

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2026.

“… RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of William Shepard Harris, Sr., a treasured member of the Wi******er community whose legacy of love, service, and devotion enriched the lives of all who knew him; ...”

Presented by Virginia State Delegate Bill Wiley.

Happening tonight…

“Still Family: William Still and the Legacy of the Underground Railroad” is presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Henkel Hall, Hester Auditorium, on the campus of Shenandoah University (726 Wade Miller Dr., Wi******er). The event is FREE and open to the public.

Based in Philadelphia, Pa., William Still was a conductor of the Underground Railroad. In his obituary, The New York Times proclaimed Still “The Father of the Underground Railroad” and credited him with helping as many as 800 slaves escape to freedom.
