Students began the day with a final run-through of their awards ceremony script before heading out to explore careers in the hospitality industry.

Their first stop was The Ivy Chest Floral & Decor, where Donnie and Kaleigh Fincham shared insights into event planning, floral design, and what it takes to create memorable experiences. Next, students visited Water Street Kitchen, where Chef Dan Kalber discussed careers in the culinary field and the many opportunities that support the restaurant industry.

Day 5 of ALP was all about health care, community service, and making a difference!

Students started the day by preparing for their awards ceremony and sharpening their professional skills through mock interviews. They then visited Valley Health to learn about the many career opportunities within the healthcare field, participate in Stop the Bleed training, tour the Valley Health Wellness & Fitness Center, and hear from the Talent Acquisition team.

The afternoon took students to Our Health VA, where they explored the nonprofit sector by hearing from Director Sharen Gromling and Director of The YDC, Sarah Fishel, about the important role nonprofits play in addressing community needs and creating lasting impact. Students worked in teams to identify community needs, create their own nonprofit organizations, and pitch their ideas for funding support.

To wrap up the day, students put service into action by helping clean the grounds at The Laurel Center: Intervention for Domestic and Sexual Violence and packing food for the Freedge.

A day filled with learning, leadership, and giving back to the community!

This week's blog explores the powerful connection between tourism, local support, and economic growth in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Tourism plays a vital role in the success of businesses across our region—but its impact goes far beyond attracting visitors. When residents and visitors choose to shop, dine, and explore locally, they help strengthen our economy, support small businesses, sustain jobs, and preserve the unique character of our communities.

We also highlight why supporting our local orchards is especially important this year following the challenges many growers have faced due to a late-season freeze.

Day 4 of ALP focused on Agriculture & Entrepreneurship! Students spent the day exploring how local businesses and agricultural operations grow, adapt, and contribute to the strength of our regional economy.

The day began with Andy Gyurisin of the Laurel Ridge Small Business Development Center, who shared valuable insights on entrepreneurship and the skills needed to turn ideas into successful businesses.

At Weber’s Nursery & Garden Center, Allie, Retail Manager, provided a behind-the-scenes look at how a family-owned business has evolved over generations while continuing to support customers, employees, and others throughout the industry.

Students then visited West Oaks Farm Market & Event Center, where Mary Snapp shared the history of the farm and its growth into a popular market and event destination. During lunch, sponsored by Horizon Farm Credit, students learned how financing and crop insurance help agricultural businesses invest in their operations and manage risk.

The day concluded at Gore's Meats, where Kyleigh Gore guided students through the farm, processing facility, and retail operation. Participants gained a firsthand understanding of how food safely moves from farm to table and explored the many careers involved in agriculture, food production, logistics, and retail.

Thank you to our hosts and presenters for showcasing the innovation, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit that help drive our region forward!

A special thank you to Horizon Farm Credit for sponsoring lunch and helping make this valuable learning experience possible for our students.
