Workforce development is a critical part of economic development, and Frederick County is fortunate to have a strong partner in Laurel Ridge Community College.

The Laurel Ridge Community College Workforce Solutions office offers workforce and corporate training designed to respond to the needs of today’s employers, from customized training for businesses to hands-on programs that prepare students for high-demand careers.

The college’s Power Line Worker Program is a great example. This intensive, hands-on program prepares students for careers in the power industry while providing opportunities to earn multiple industry-recognized credentials. Students train in a real-world environment, developing the practical skills employers are looking for.

Programs like this have an impact far beyond the classroom. They create career pathways for our residents, help employers access skilled talent, and strengthen Frederick County’s ability to attract and retain businesses.

Today we welcomed Leslie Currle from People Incorporated to the Frederick County EDA office to learn more about the resources they offer local businesses and residents.

People Inc. offers small business loans for both new and growing companies. They also provide small business training and technical assistance, working one-on-one with owners on business management and day-to-day operations. For larger projects, their New Markets Tax Credit program helps bring private investment into community development in low-income areas.

For residents, People Inc. offers personal loans as a better alternative to payday lenders, high-interest loans, and credit cards. Residents may also qualify for matched savings accounts through the RISE program, which helps people save toward buying a home, continuing their education, transportation, starting a small business, and more.

From orchards to farm stands to wineries, Frederick County's agricultural roots are a big part of what makes this place special, and a real driver of our local economy.

Frederick County EDA Business Retention Manager Shayla Rickard was interviewed at the Virginia Economic Development Association conference in Danville, where she talked about agritourism and the impact it has on economic development. She explained how investing in what makes a community unique supports local businesses, attracts visitors, and strengthens the regional economy.
