The initiative is expected to create 150 transitional housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds for vulnerable individuals across Greater London.
“I have walked these streets for many decades,” Attenborough said quietly during a brief and emotional press conference marking his 100th birthday. “I have seen far too many people living without shelter, without support, and too often without anyone truly noticing them. If I am fortunate enough to be in a position to help, then I believe I have a responsibility to do so. No human being deserves to be left out in the cold.”
According to organizers behind the project, the centers will provide far more than temporary shelter. They will include employment assistance programs, mental health counseling, addiction recovery support, medical referrals, and long-term transition services designed to help individuals slowly rebuild stability and independence in their lives.
Attenborough, who has lived and worked in London for much of his extraordinary career, explained that the idea of community has always been deeply important to him.
“This city has given me an extraordinary life,” he shared. “If I can use what I’ve earned to give something genuinely meaningful back to people who have been forgotten, then that is exactly what I want to do. This is about dignity. About compassion. About giving people a real chance to begin again.”
Construction on the first facility is expected to begin later this year, with locations reportedly being considered in North and East London, where homelessness pressures have continued to rise in recent years.
Several local officials have already described the effort as one of the largest privately funded homelessness support initiatives launched in the United Kingdom in recent memory.
