Our We Don't Waste Words event featured Lee Shainis, who has trained more than 50,000 people on writing in plain language.

A few things stuck with us:
Read it out loud. If it feels clunky to say, it’ll feel clunky to read. Cut about half the words. You probably won’t lose meaning, just drag. “Did that make sense?” puts the burden on your audience. Ask whether you were clear instead. And plain language isn’t dumbing things down. It’s a trust signal.

More than 1 in 5 U.S. adults did not learn English as their first language, and many Americans read at a basic or intermediate reading level. Clear writing helps more people access, understand, and connect with your message.

Thanks to Lee for the practical playbook, We Don't Waste for hosting, and Einstein Bros. for keeping us fed.
