Finding rodent droppings in your shed, cabin, or garage? Stop before you clean.

Even though it's a different type than the cruise ship cases, deer mice in Colorado can carry hantavirus, which can cause a rare but serious (and sometimes deadly) illness. The cruise ship cases are associated with a rodent species not found in the U.S.

Our board members had a blast serving as Special Award Organization judges at the 2026 Colorado Science and Engineering Fair last week!

The CEHA Junior Division Award went to Ingram Olson from Telluride Middle School, who investigated how adding plants or other materials could impact the mycoremediation of petroleum.
The Senior Division Award was earned by Natalie Muro of Palmer High School for engineering a novel method to clean cyanobacteria from bodies of water.

Both projects demonstrated impressive real-world potential to advance environmental health. Winning students received monetary awards and an invitation to present their work at this year's Annual Education Conference.

It’s a true honor to support and encourage young minds pursuing science!

As we recognize National Public Health Week, we’re reminded that strong communities start with strong public health systems, and environmental health is at the foundation of both.

From ensuring safe food and water to protecting the environments where people live, work and play, environmental health professionals are on the front lines of prevention every day. Their work not only safeguards health, but also supports economic stability and long-term community resilience.

While environmental health may not always be visible, its impact is constant—and essential.

This week and every week, we recognize and thank the professionals working to create healthier environments and a stronger, safer future for all.

— Larry Ramdin, President, National Environmental Health Association
